Many members of chambers do pro bono work. We also raise awareness of worthy causes through our friends and professional contacts.
When appropriate members of chambers have always been prepared to provide free legal advice. They regularly assist clients who cannot afford to pay or obtain public funding through charities such as the Bar Pro Bono Unit and the Free Representation Unit. They also review cases on behalf of defendants imprisoned in Jamaica and advise on the merits of appeal and appear on their behalf before the Privy Council.
The Free Representation Unit (FRU) provides legal advice, case preparation and advocacy in tribunal cases for people can’t find legal support, for want of personal means or public funding.
To provide this service, FRU trains volunteer law students and legal professionals in the early stages of their career in the skills required to give support for the rights of others. www.freerepresentationunit.org.uk
The Mary Ward Legal Centre is a charity that has been providing free quality legal services to people in need, hardship and distress for over 100 years.
It specialises in social justice cases that are often urgent and complex and is one of the many organisations that regularly holds management committee and other meetings in our chambers. www.marywardlegal.org.uk
We are pleased to take students through the joint initiative organised through the Social Mobility Foundation. This initiative is designed to provide bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds with the opportunity to get an insight into a career at the Bar.
The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) provides support for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their families. The services that SIA provides encourage paralysed individuals to reach their full potential and lead full, independent lives.
Outer Temple has had a long association with the SIA, raising awareness of, and money for, their work. www.spinal.co.uk/

The Refugee Council is a charity providing advice and practical support to people who have fled persecution and violence.
It helps many vulnerable people to gain access to legal services. The Council also campaigns against unfair policies and works to ensure that the rights enshrined in national and international law are not eroded.
Outer Temple Chambers is proud to work with the Refugee Council to help raise funds and awareness of its campaigns. www.refugeecouncil.org.uk
Chambers is authorised to use the “two ticks” symbol which means that we are recognised as an employer which is ‘positive about disabled people’. We encourage applicants with a disability to apply to us for advertised vacancies and we undertake to interview all applicants who meet the criteria for appointment.

Outer Temple Chambers is pleased to promote and support the work of the Women’s Equality Network (WEN) which was launched on 29 March 2012. WEN provides an online peer to peer forum where women facing discrimination in the work place can share their experiences and support each other in a secure and confidential manner. The Bloomsbury Art Fair was co-founded by Eva Anderson, George Crofton and Vicky Holton (who have all sustained a spinal cord injury) and Michael Bowes QC, deputy Head of Outer Temple Chambers. In bringing a quality-driven, contemporary art fair to Bloomsbury, there were three main aims: to celebrate the achievements of people affected by catastrophic injuries, to challenge the perception of disabled people and to raise funds for selected charities.
The inaugural Bloomsbury Art Fair took place in July 2011, showcasing works from a selection of 38 established and emerging artists and galleries. The art fair was dramatically opened with an apache helicopter flypast, followed by an introduction from BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner OBE.
The 2012 Art Fair will open with a preview on the 4th July and a Charity Gala Reception on 5th July. It will welcome the public from 6th to 8th July, and will benefit the following charities: Motivation, the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust and Walking with the Wounded. The charities all share a common goal of helping people recover following a life-changing injury.
The Bloomsbury Art Fair will again be held in the stunning surroundings of Goodenough College and its private courtyard garden in central London.
Outer Temple Chambers is again sponsoring complimentary tickets for all Bar Council members and staff.
