Banking and Business Law

Clare started her professional career as a City solicitor at Simmons & Simmons, qualifying into their Finance and Insurance Litigation department. During her time in private practice, she acted for banks, insurance companies and other corporates on complex and often multi-jurisdictional disputes.

As a junior barrister, Clare's practice embraces a range of banking and business law, including; partnership disputes, professional negligence claims, trusts disputes, contractual disputes, PPI mis-selling claims and insolvency. Clare has rights of audience in the Dubai International Financial Court (DIFC) and is a member of COMBAR.

Financial Services

Clare has recently completed a secondment to the FSA’s enforcement division where she worked on two major investigations. She regularly advises clients on the impact of FSMA and the FSA rules.

Clare also has extensive transactional experience in the financial services field, having worked as an in-house lawyer at UBS Investment Bank, specialising in hedge funds, prime brokerage and structured products prior to coming to the Bar.

Clare is a member of the Financial Services Lawyers Association.

Employment and Pensions

Clare has a fast-developing practice in employment law and has a particular interest in employment law disputes in the financial services sector.  She provides advice and advocacy for both Claimants and Respondents in a number of areas, including; unfair dismissal, constructive dismissal, discrimination, TUPE, pension rights, equal pay and redundancy. Clare is regularly instructed in multi-day hearings and interim matters.

Clare also has expertise in employment and pensions cross-over matters.

Clare is a member of ELA and ELBA and is standing counsel to the British Association of Journalists.

  • Acting for the Respondent in this appeal from the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal in a multi-billion dollar claim.  Issues of jurisdiction, particularly forum non conveniens.
  • Guantanamo Bay damages claim
  • Assisting the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in drafting of defences in private law claims brought against the FCO by former inmates of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
