Charles Foster practises almost exclusively in the field of medical law. He deals with all types of regulatory work involving the healthcare professions (appearing regularly at the GMC, the GDC and many other tribunals), consent to treatment and withdrawal of treatment cases; clinical confidentiality; medical crime, inquests and clinical negligence. He has been involved in many of the cornerstone cases in recent years, including R v Chief Constable of West Mercia ex p Jepson; Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust v As, Bs and others; Steel v Joy and Halsey v Milton Keynes NHS Trust; Kataria v Essex Strategic Health Authority; Calver v Westwood Veterinary Group; and In re D (Mental Patient: Habeas Corpus).

He is the author, editor or contributor to many of the key books in the area, including Elements of Medical Law, Medical Mistakes, Professional Negligence and Liability, Public Inquiries, Regulating Health Care Quality, Clinical Guidelines: Law, Policy and Practice, Clinical Confidentiality, Disclosure and Confidentiality, Healthcare Law: The impact of the Human Rights Act 1988, Twenty-first century nursing: Law and Ethics, Civil Advocacy, Nursing Law and Ethics, and many others.

Charles writes regularly for many publications on medical law. He has hundreds of publications to his name. He teaches medical law and ethics at the University of Oxford.

He is a qualified veterinary surgeon and sits as a Recorder in the Crown Court and the County Court.

Charles is a Fellow of Green Templeton College, Oxford.
