Following a distinction in commercial law from the LSE James has developed a commercial and chancery practice with an emphasis on occupational pension schemes and commercial litigation.

On the pensions side James has extensive experience of complex multiparty litigation arising out of his appointment as standing counsel to the Determinations Panel of The Pensions Regulator. James has advised the Panel in all of its landmark cases such as Sea Containers and Telent and recently advised the Panel in the Nortel case. James is also instructed by private clients in cases involving rectification, equalisation and the construction of pension scheme rules. James also has experience of conducting appeals from The Pensions Ombudsman including the reported case of Kemp v Simms  [2008] EWHC 2579 (Ch). James has also represented trustees in cases involving overpayments and misstatements and has benefited from spells of secondment at leading pension practices. He is a member of the APL.

James' commercial practice covers a wide range of work both in the County and High Court. James frequently conducts contested applications and trials in commercial disputes in matters concerning debt recovery and the sale and supply of goods. James has also been instructed in a number of professional negligence cases involving surveyors and solicitors.

James is also developing a VAT practice and recently appeared for the successful trader in Mobilx Ltd & Ors v HM Revenue & Customs [2010] EWCA Civ 517 with Michael Patchett-Joyce.
