Matthew Stockwell is a personal injury and public law barrister who specialises in serious injury litigation and welfare related aspects of public law. His caseload is made up almost exclusively of cases with a mixture of high value (or other importance to the parties), sensitivity and complexity. He is recognised for his know-how and experience, combined with a strong work ethic and empathy with clients. He has acted for claimants and defendants at all levels up to and including the Supreme Court.

Matthew has extensive involvement in appeals, test cases and declaratory proceedings. He is often counsel of choice in cases involving novel and developing areas of the law to assist on strategy along with his technical expertise and advocacy skills. Personal Injury

Matthew enjoys a national reputation among his peers for personal injury law:

  • Executive committee of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) between 2007 and 2015 – as Vice President in 2012 & President in 2013.  In recognition of his “outstanding contribution” to the work of the organisation, he was made an Honorary Life Member in 2015
  • Co-author of the APIL Guide to Accidents at Work
  • Member of APIL’s Training & Accreditation Committee, with extensive experience organising and delivering specialist training to fellow professionals, particularly on the subject of brain injury and serious injury litigation
  • Working Party member and contributor to the Guide to the Conduct of Cases Involving Serious Injury, which has been developed following years of collaborative work between APIL, FOIL and major insurers
  • Past Editorial Board Member, Journal of Personal Law.

Matthew is adept at advising on the effective preparation and presentation of complex quantum claims including ongoing care requirements, career forecasting in the context of full and partial earnings loss, accommodation, aids and adaptation claims, mitigation arguments, pension loss, provisional damages and the structuring of PPO awards. He has particular experience assisting clients following brain injury, spinal cord injury, upper and lower limb amputation (including prosthetic rehabilitation), psychiatric injury, chronic pain disorders and other disabling conditions. He is completely committed to early identification of client needs, effective rehabilitation and proactive case progression.

Drawing on his health and social care expertise, Matthew regularly acts on behalf of employees, clients, detainees and members of the public who are injured in connection with nursing, community care and mental health provision. He also has considerable experience of inquests (particularly those with juries arising from death at work or medical errors) and the sensitive, effective conduct of fatal accident and dependency claims.

Matthew also acted in numerous military claims on behalf of injured members of the armed forces – involving operational activities, training, selection, sports, leisure and civilian incidents – where service careers has been interrupted or curtailed.
