Michael receives instructions in all types of employment litigation and has appeared in both tribunals and the High Court in wrongful and unfair dismissal, discrimination, victimisation and redundancy claims. He is regularly instructed by a broad cross section of clients including large corporate entities, banking and financial institutions, and public service bodies such as NHS Trusts, as well as undertaking claimant work for several notable trade unions. He has a particular interest in the field of discrimination.

A significant proportion of Michael's recent practice has focused on advising and representing doctors and others in healthcare, for example before the General Medical Council. He has just acted as sole counsel in a three week hearing before the GMC, representing a surgeon accused of significant surgical negligence. The GMC made no adverse findings against his client, who was released from the proceedings after Stage 1. In 2009 Michael completed a twelve week trial, instructed by the Medical Protection Society and defending a doctor charged with 37 counts of defrauding the NHS (being led by Alan Jenkins). The doctor was acquitted on all counts by a unanimous verdict. He is a member of the ARDL.

Linked to his advisory work in the above areas, Michael has gained experience in various types of contractual dispute. He recently appeared in the High Court in a matter involving the correct contractual construction of a nationwide NHS term of employment.

Michael has also acted in two public inquiries, instructed by the Government. Through much of 2008 he acted as one of junior counsel to the Rosemary Nelson Inquiry, which investigated allegations of government collusion in the murder of a Northern Irish solicitor. Michael has previously been instructed by the Robert Hamill Inquiry. He is a contributing author to the forthcoming Oxford University Press book, "Public Inquiries".

Michael is security cleared (Developed Vetted).

Michael achieved a Distinction in his CPE (law degree) and was a Middle Temple scholar during both the CPE and Bar exams (Major Scholar - Lord Diplock and Queen Mother Scholarships).
