vCard Philip Mott
Philip Mott undertakes a wide mix of criminal and civil work. Particular features are gross negligence manslaughter, major frauds, clinical negligence, especially involving mental health issues.
Philip Mott QC is first and foremost an advocate, whatever the type of work. His quiet style involves achieving mastery of the details of a case, but then standing back to look at the overall strategic objectives and how best to achieve them. His is a results-based approach, although he is quite capable of arguing points of pure law if that will assist the client.
With very wide experience in civil and criminal law, over the course of his career, Philip has appeared in many gross negligence manslaughter prosecutions; major fraud cases; clinical negligence claims for both claimants and defendants; personal injury work; local authority negligence claims; and many other areas of law.
He was Leader of the Western Circuit between 2004 and 2007, and is still involved with work for the Bar Council on a number of initiatives, having launched “Death of the Mention” and proposals for a quality assurance scheme for advocates.
He now combines his practice, and work for the profession, with sitting part-time in various jurisdictions – as a Deputy High Court Judge in the Queen’s Bench and Chancery Divisions, and in the Administrative Court; as a Recorder of the Crown Court authorised to try rape and serious sexual offences; and as a President of the Mental Health Review Tribunal dealing with restricted patients. He is an advocacy trainer for the Western Circuit, and a founder member of the Advocacy Training Council.
