Since starting practice in 1996 Robert has developed particular expertise in high-value, complex contractual litigation in the UK and abroad.  He has appeared in a large number of asset recovery, freezing injunction and insolvency cases and has also acted in a number of high-profile cases against DEFRA and the government arising out of the foot and mouth disease outbreaks in 2001 and 2007 and the Hunting Act 2004.  Robert has also acted in a large number of cases as independent Counsel for the police and the Serious Fraud Office determining matters of legal professional privilege asserted by suspects.  Robert also has experience in serious fraud, both in the criminal and civil spheres.

Concentrating on commercially-focussed advice he "has a practical, no-nonsense approach together with an excellent eye for detail" and has appeared in a number of international cases and arbitrations.  Robert is called to the Bar in Northern Ireland and as a foreign legal consultant in the State of New York.  Robert is also registered at the Dubai International Financial Centre and has advised in a number of matters from Chambers' Abu Dhabi annexe.  He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is able to accept instructions directly from members of the public.

Robert has been involved in a large number of partnership disputes and in interpretation,  construction and rectification of commercial contracts and deeds.  He is a member of the specialist commercial bar association and the chancery bar association and is a member of Tecbar - the specialist bar association for the technology & construction court.

He has a growing practice in financial services law and regulation. He has advised financial services firms including banks, buildings societies and investment managers (hedge funds), as well as individuals. He has particular experience of matters involving asset recovery, insolvency and professional negligence. Recent work has included advising a UAE company about forum and substantive issues concerning an LCIA arbitration against a UK bank relating to foreign exchange transactions. He has also advised on numerous mis-selling cases relating to pensions, endowments and other financial service products. He is currently acting in a multi-million dollar Commercial Court claim, acting for a director of a hedge fund against a bank and the fund's former legal advisers in a case concerning breach of mandate, election and ratification.
