Outer Temple Chambers has long been established as one of the leading Chambers specialising in pensions law, with recognised expertise at all levels of call. Members of Chambers advise employers, trustees (in particular professional trustee companies), insurers, industry bodies (e.g. the Pensions Regulator and the Pensions Protection Fund), the government and pension scheme members on all aspects of pensions law, from interpreting the most technical details of new legislation to advising on the operation of equitable principles in the pensions context. Chambers acts regularly in a wide range of disciplinary and regulatory proceedings. In financial and professional work, members act for the FSA and the Council of Lloyd’s and in proceedings before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal, the Actuaries Disciplinary Tribunal and the Institute of Chartered Accountants. In medical work, members act in proceedings before the General Medical Council, the General Dental Council, the FHSAA, Primary Care Trust Tribunals, the Hearing Aid Council and in the fields of psychology and nursing. In family work, Chambers has acted for Ofsted in almost all cases before the Care Standards Tribunal. Members regularly appear before the Transport Tribunal and have appeared in many of the cases which have altered the regulatory regime and also appear before the Civil Aviation Authority. Chambers has unparalleled expertise in corporate manslaughter and the related area of health and safety. Teams have worked on a number of landmark cases of criminal negligence, including the Lyme Bay canoeing disaster, the loss of the trawler Pescado, the loss of the Maria Assumpta, the capsize of the Lone Signature, the Avonmouth Bridge collapse and the investigations into the rail crashes at Southall, Ladbroke Grove, Hatfield, Tebay and Potters Bar.

Chambers acts in the highly specialised fields of commercial fraud, corporate manslaughter and the inter-jurisdictional issues of extradition and asset recovery. Our track record in major commercial crime is well proven and members of Chambers have appeared in many high profile serious fraud cases including Guinness, Blue Arrow, Polly Peck, Barlow Clowes, Maxwell, Levitt, Wickes and most recently O’Neill and others – known as Operation Holbein - concerning the manipulation of the generic pharmaceutical industry. Several members are currently instructed by the Serious Fraud Office in substantial investigations.

Chambers undertakes work for both claimants and defendants, whether funded privately, by insurance or under conditional fee agreements. This includes large scale group litigations to smaller accidents. Work is also undertaken in relation to industrial diseases, health and safety at work, road traffic claims, severe brain and spinal injury cases, accidents at sea, stress claims and sports injuries. We also advise and appear in professional negligence actions arising out of the mishandling of personal injury claims which are, for example, time-barred, struck out for other procedural reasons or have been settled disadvantageously.

Chambers also advises on a wide range of healthcare issues including confidentiality, reproductive rights and embryology, statutory consultation on proposed changes to health service provision, the respective responsibilities of health and social care bodies, regulation of independent hospitals and health facilities under the Care Standards Act 2000, the application of the Human Rights Act 1998 and discrimination and equal

Members of Chambers deal with judicial review cases (often acting for or against central and local government), Human Rights cases in the UK and Strasbourg and cases before a wide range of tribunals. We advise on the powers and duties of public bodies and the public law aspects of commercial transactions. We are well known for our work in major public inquiries, including many healthcare and disaster inquiries and the inquiry into the death of Zahid Mubarek. We work closely with colleagues in Chambers when public law issues arise in any context. We have specialist knowledge of transport law, sports law, all aspects of social care and mental health law and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
