Work experience

Outer Temple Chambers accepts school and college students between the ages of 14 and 18 for work experience for a period of one or (preferably) two weeks.

We prioritise students from local state schools in Central and East London.  Applications should be made through the school to the office manager.

We offer experience of working in a barristers' chambers.  This is relevant to students whose interest lie in one or more of the following areas:

Becoming a lawyer

Clerking (behind the scenes management of barrister's work)

Finance work or fees collection

Front of house, reception and telephony work

Marketing and administration

Most of the time students will spend time in chambers working alongside members of staff.  They will visit the Royal Courts of Justice with the junior clerks and it may be possible for them to attend court with a barrister.

The nature of the work will vary according to the staff team but could include: distributing post, filing, learning to use copying and fax machines, packaging parcels, stock-taking, sitting on reception, helping out with events and projects.  More experienced students may be encouraged to make telephone calls, serve clients, undertake work on Excel or Word or take on a specific piece of work.  All students will be supervised throughout their work experience.

Chambers has public liability insurance to the value of £1,000,000.

Work experience staff are expected to attend chambers between 9.30am and 5.30pm with an hour for lunch.  These hours can be varied in consultation with the office manager.
