Work Experience

We accept school and college students between the ages of 14 and 18 for work experience at our chambers for a period of one or (preferably) two weeks.

We prioritise students from local state schools in central and east London. Applications should be made through the school to the office manager.

The work experience we offer is relevant to students whose interest lie in one or more of the following areas.

  • Becoming a lawyer
  • Clerking (behind the scenes management of barrister's work)
  • Finance and fee collection
  • Front of house, reception and telephony work
  • Marketing and administration

Students will spend most of their time in chambers working alongside members of staff. They will visit the Royal Courts of Justice with the junior clerks and it may be possible for them to attend court with a barrister.

The nature of the work will vary according to the staff team but could include distributing post, filing, learning to use copying and fax machines, packaging parcels, stock-taking, sitting on reception, helping out with events and projects.

More experienced students may be encouraged to make telephone calls, serve clients, undertake work on Excel or Word or take on a specific piece of work. All students will be supervised throughout their work experience.

Feedback on our work experience

“Thanks very much for your email. The programme you put together seems to have been a great success as we had some very positive feedback from those attending. I think you struck just the right balance for the visit”. Gillian Dollamore Bar Council

“Thank you for a fantastic week of work experience.  I had a really useful (and enjoyable) time at Outer Temple which will be a great help during the university application process.  I particularly enjoyed going to court and getting to talk to barristers.”

“The placement was fantastic and I really value the experience.  I have nothing negative to say about my time at Outer Temple Chambers.
