About the swim

Being a swimming enthusiast and having taken part in a couple of relay Channel swims with Team Wallabies in 2020 and Team Rhinos in 2022, Andrew Short KC this year took the plunge and decided to swim solo for charity.

Andrew successfully completed a swim of the English Channel in August 2023 to support and raise funds for Aspire, a wonderful charity that provides essential support to people who have Spinal Cord Injury.

He swam about 35km. It sounds like a wild feat, but Andrew had been training hard for a few months before the swim. His family members, friends and colleagues also showed great endurance as he has talked incessantly about his plans for nutrition and the condition of his rotator cuff.  He was accompanied by a small boat with a specialist pilot and a support crew of two who promised to make sure he stayed alive and followed the rules – no wetsuit and no touching the boat – in a freezing cold sea full of sewage. They had even promised to give him a lift back – but only if he actually made it to the beach. Otherwise, he may have had to swim back (so, onward was the only option really).

With the weather and sea conditions being favourable, and all going well, this epic challenge took place on 10th August. Andrew swam for a total of 15 hours and 49 minutes from Shakespeare’s Beach to Wissant!
