Outer Temple’s David Russell KC was recently published in a Bloomberg Tax article called ‘Dubai Family Wealth Takes the Stage With New Planning Center’. Dubai is making it easier than ever for large family businesses to sustain themselves over time. Dubai has worked hard to position itself an attractive jurisdiction for businesses, including family businesses. It had no personal or corporate income taxes until recently, when it introduced one of the world’s lowest corporate income tax rates of 9% to comply with the OECD’s Global Tax Deal. Louis Weston, who leads the Sports Law Group, acted for the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) in the prosecution of 10 snooker players for match-fixing and betting offences. The case which was heard over 4 days in April and May 2023, has resulted in each of the 10 players being found in breach of the WPBSA Member Rules and suspensions being imposed on all of them. The principal offenders Liang Wenbo and Li Hang both have been banned for life and other players suspended for periods of between 1.75 and 5.33 years. Robert Dickason of Outer Temple Chambers and Leigh-Ann Mulcahy KC of Fountain Court Chambers acted for the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in litigation arising from the use of hormonal pregnancy test (HPT) tablets taken to diagnose pregnancy in the 1950s-1970s. In this group litigation, over 200 claims were issued against the pharmaceutical manufacturers of two HPTs (Primodos and Amenorone Forte), as well as against the Government on the basis that it was responsible for safe regulation of HPTs in the 1950s-1970s. The claimants maintained that HPTs taken during pregnancy had caused them to suffer congenital malformations, miscarriage and/or stillbirth.
