Alex Line successfully represents local authority in important High Court case confirming that the First-tier Tribunal (HESC) is a suitable alternative remedy to judicial review In R (LW) v London Borough of Islington [2025] EWHC 703 (Admin), following a rolled-up hearing, the High Court has confirmed that the First-tier Tribunal (Health, Education and Social Care Chamber), which deals with statutory appeals under the Children and Families Act 2014 concerning EHC Plans, is a suitable alternative remedy to judicial review. Louis Weston acts for Darts Regulation Authority in prosecution for player betting offences

Louis Weston acted for the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) in the prosecution of professional darts player Prakash Jiwa for betting offences and match fixing under DRA Rules. Louis, the Head of Outer Temple’s Sports Law team acted for the DRA in the case of Prakash Jiwa, where the player was found guilty of fixing four matches and betting on darts at a hearing before the Darts Regulation Authority Disciplinary Committee. The case arose from Mr Jiwa deliberately losing the matches for his associates to bet upon. Jiwa, a three time winner of the PDC Tour card, has been suspended for 8 years from the sport, and faced a fine of £17,741.46. The DRA said that the decision “sends a clear message…

Martina Murphy successfully defends Respondent in 24-day ET case, Kalar v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis

The Employment Tribunal handed down judgment in the case of Mr S Kalar v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, dismissing all claims brought against the Metropolitan Police. Martina Murphy acted for the successful Respondent. Mr S Kalar had been employed as a police officer by the Metropolitan Police from 1993 until he retired in 2023. Mr Kalar brought wide-ranging discrimination claims under the Equality Act 2010 in relation to both race and disability and whistleblowing claims under the Employment Rights Act 1996 comprising over 270 individual allegations. The Claimant referred to an “an overarching culture of institutional racism, misogyny and disablism” with allegations spanning several years. James Counsell KC represents the SRA in Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal proceedings against a US law firm for breaches of AML regulations

James Counsell KC recently acted on behalf of the Solicitors Regulatory Authority, successfully prosecuting Simpson Thacher & Bartlett for failing to have anti-money laundering (AML) risk assessments and procedures in place in its London office. A fine of £300,000 was issued by the regulatory body. The SRA identified various issues during a routine review of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in 2021 and referred the matter to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) in November 2023, instructing James Counsell KC to act on its behalf.
