We are delighted to announce that Outer Temple pupils Elliott Courcha and Sophie Hyland have accepted offers of tenancy in Chambers. Their tenancies will commence in September 2025. Elliott and Sophie began their pupillages at Outer Temple Chambers in September 2024 and have recently both accepted offers of tenancies to commence in September 2025. Head of pupillage, Saul Margo says, “We are very lucky to have Elliott and Sophie and have no doubt they will prove to be real assets to Chambers in the years to come. Louis Weston delivered a webinar session on ‘Drafting Effective Safeguarding Policies’ to Sport Resolutions, as part of their Sport Case Management Programme on Thursday 10th July 2025. The webinar focused on policies to help all participating National Governing Bodies (NGBs) strengthen their safeguarding frameworks. The session covered the common challenges in drafting safeguarding policies and subsequent disciplinary processes, and provided clear, practical guidance for creating a procedure that is both legally robust and operationally effective. James Smith has written an article titled ‘Russia sanctions and the prohibition on trust services’ for the latest journal article of Trusts & Trustees, published on 9th July 2025. UK sanctions law contains a prohibition on the provision of trust services to or for the benefit of designated persons and persons connected with Russia. This article analyses the background to and legal framework of the prohibition. The article then looks at the application of the prohibition to Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories, before considering practical steps for affected practitioners. International injury specialist Ian Denham has been appointed to sit on the EU-UK Working Group of the Pan European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers (PEOPIL) together with a panel of expert lawyers from across the UK and Europe. In R (BIA, BKT, BKD, BLT) v (1) Islington Borough Council (2) Governing Body of St Jude and St Paul’s School (3) Parochial Church Council of St Judge and St Paul’s School (4) London Diocesan Board for Schools, Alex Line and Imogen Egan successfully represented the Defendant local authority in a challenge to its decision to close a local voluntary aided primary school. In April 2025 the local authority decided to close the school pursuant to powers under the Education and Inspections Act 2006, following a consultation process which started in late 2024. The case is currently litigated before the Technology and Construction Court, following the collapse of the Fundão Dam in 2015. Section 124 of the recently passed Data Use and Access Act, once enacted, will mark a key development in the legal framework governing coronial investigations into child deaths involving social media. Harry Lambert is acting for a number of bereaved parents. On Thursday 19th June 2025, the Data Use and Access Bill (now Act) 2025 or “DUAA” received Royal Assent and passed into law, although the commencement dates for each provision vary (see section 142) .
