Alex Line and Imogen Egan successfully resist challenge to school closure decision by local authority

In R (BIA, BKT, BKD, BLT) v (1) Islington Borough Council (2) Governing Body of St Jude and St Paul’s School (3) Parochial Church Council of St Judge and St Paul’s School (4) London Diocesan Board for Schools, Alex Line and Imogen Egan successfully represented the Defendant local authority in a challenge to its decision to close a local voluntary aided primary school. In April 2025 the local authority decided to close the school pursuant to powers under the Education and Inspections Act 2006, following a consultation process which started in late 2024. Fiona Horlick KC and Charlotte Elves act for the Municipality Claimants (MCs) in a contempt application arising out of Município De Mariana v BHP Group (UK) Limited & Ors [2025] EWHC 1601 (TCC). The case is currently litigated before the Technology and Construction Court, following the collapse of the Fundão Dam in 2015. The Contempt Application was brought in October 2024, alleging that the Defendant mining corporation had interfered in the due administration of justice by procuring and funding a claim before the Brazilian Constitutional Court with the aim of removing the MCs access to the English Courts in the ongoing proceedings. Section 124 of the recently passed Data Use and Access Act, once enacted, will mark a key development in the legal framework governing coronial investigations into child deaths involving social media. Harry Lambert is acting for a number of bereaved parents. On Thursday 19th June 2025, the Data Use and Access Bill (now Act) 2025 or “DUAA” received Royal Assent and passed into law, although the commencement dates for each provision vary (see section 142) . The ICO has already followed suit with some useful guidance, published here. Lydia Seymour and Elizabeth Grace secure holiday pay for Out-of-Hours GPs in Northern Ireland

Lydia Seymour and Elizabeth Grace have successfully argued that two Belfast doctors, Dr. Durkan and Dr. O’Neill, are entitled to holiday pay from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, following a long-standing dispute. The case, which was a test case backed by the BMA and heard by the former President of the Northern Irish Industrial Tribunals and Fair Employment Tribunal, is likely to determine the terms of employment for a significant number of sessional Out-of-Hours GPs in the region. The background to the case was that sessional Out-of-Hours GPs had originally been deemed self-employed by the Trust; however, in 2017 HMRC determined that they were employees.
