Carin Hunt is a civil practitioner specialising in personal injuryclinical negligencetravel law, inquests, professional regulation (healthcare), the Court of Protection, education law, and the law of international organisations. She acts for Claimants and Defendants.

Carin is currently ranked as a Rising Star in Personal Injury in Legal 500 and as Up and Coming in Travel: International Personal Injury in Chambers and Partners.  In September 2023, Carin was appointed to the Attorney General’s C Panel of Counsel.

Prior to the Bar, Carin read Law at St Catherine’s College Oxford, after which she became a Consultant at the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal in Jordan.

Carin has an academic background in Medical Ethics and Medical Law. She interned at the Global Health Ethics Department of the World Health Organisation in 2014 and then completed a Masters in Medical Law and Ethics at King’s College London (2015/2016), receiving a Distinction. Thereafter Carin held roles as a Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, a Seminar Leader at University College Dublin, and as a Research Assistant in the Law Faculties of Oxford and UCL. Carin continues to maintain an interest in healthcare ethics alongside her career at the Bar.

Expertise

Carin is currently ranked as a Rising Star in Personal Injury in Legal 500. She sits on the Executive Committee of the Personal Injury Bar Association (PIBA) and is co-chair of the PIBA Junior Committee.

As part of her busy multi-track personal injury practice, in which she acts for both Claimants and Defendants, Carin regularly appears at trial, CCMCs, application hearings, infant settlement approval hearings, joint settlement meetings, and inquests with a personal injury element. She undertakes personal injury work in her role as junior counsel to the Crown on the Attorney General’s C-Panel.

Carin takes instructions in a broad range of personal injury cases including accidents at work, road traffic accidents, accidents involving animals, and claims under the Highways Act 1989 and the OLA 1957. Carin also has experience of led work in high value catastrophic brain and spinal injury cases.

Carin has acted for claimants appealing the quantum of their awards from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. She has experience of acting for those who have witnessed a violent attack on a loved one, suffering psychiatric injury as a result, and those who have been bereaved by a violent crime.

Carin acts for both Claimants and Defendants in clinical negligence cases. She has experience of claims brought under the Fatal Accidents Act 1976 and has been instructed to advise on liability and quantum in claims arising from various circumstances including the following:

  • Contraction of MRSA on an obstetrics ward
  • Complications and poor outcomes in plastic surgery
  • Delayed diagnosis of cancers (resulting in reduced life expectancy) and life-threatening medical conditions including stroke
  • Failures to properly consent patients for surgeries including abdominoplasty and endometrial ablation (resulting in the loss of the ability to bear children)
  • Failure to properly manage wound sites (resulting in infection and protracted recovery) and to prevent the development of pressure sores (in hospital and care home settings)
  • Failure to properly manage treatment of patients with mental health issues and suicidal ideation (resulting in death)
  • Falls in hospital (resulting in various injuries, including, in one instance, a fatal haematoma)
  • Misdiagnoses
  • Unnecessary surgeries including removal cannulated screws from a hip joint in a patient with SUFE

Carin regularly appears at trial, CCMCs, application hearings, infant settlement approval hearings, joint settlement meetings, and at inquests with a clinical negligence element. She also has experience of acting for parties at mediation of clinical negligence disputes. Carin also has experience of led work in high value clinical injury cases.

Carin acts for individuals and regulators in professional discipline matters involving healthcare practitioners.

Carin was recently instructed as a junior in a 3 month hearing before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, acting for a doctor facing over 40 allegations.

Carin is currently ranked as Up and Coming in ‘Travel: International Personal Injury’ in Chambers and Partners. She edits the ‘Accidents Abroad’ Chapter for the APIL Personal Injury looseleaf.

Carin has a busy travel and cross-border practice and is regularly instructed in injury claims with a foreign element. She acts for both Claimants and Defendants.

Carin regularly appears in the county court in respect of claims involving the Package Travel Regulations 1992 and the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. Carin’s experience of package travel claims extends to those involving fatal accidents.

Carin also regularly advises and drafts pleadings in clinical negligence claims arising from medical treatment abroad. Carin also advises and drafts pleadings in respect of Montreal Convention and Athens Convention claims.

Carin is an active member of the Pan-European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers (PEOPIL).

Carin advises and represents individuals and organisations in this area of law. She has a particular interest in representing employees of international organisations who wish to bring claims of harassment, sex and maternity discrimination, and direct and indirect gender discrimination against their employer. She also has an interest in defending employees against allegations of misconduct.

Carin draws on her experience working in international organisations before the Bar and her previous employment law practice to further her work in the law of international organisations. Prior to coming to the Bar, Carin worked as a Consultant at the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal in Jordan. She practised in UK employment law at the Bar for four years, before deciding to focus her employment law practice exclusively on her international disciplinary law and international administrative law work.

Carin is currently instructed in a significant case against the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) of the World Bank Group, in which indirect sex discrimination is alleged.

Carin has a broad range of experience in education law matters and is particularly interested in higher education law and public law claims involving education. Carin regularly advises and drafts submissions in respect of University complaints and academic appeals. She acts on behalf of individuals and Universities.

Carin also regularly appears in the First-tier Tribunal (Special Educational Needs & Disability) on behalf of both Appellants and Respondents.

In a recent appeal concerning a contested diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and a number of proposed education and health provisions to be added to the Appellant’s EHC plan, Carin was delighted to get a positive result for her client after the hearing. Carin’s instructing solicitor described her performance as follows:

Carin has a busy Court of Protection practice. She has a particular interest in cases involving serious medical treatment, pregnancy, and healthcare provision generally.

Carin regularly appears in the Court of Protection in respect of Section 21A and Section 16 matters. In this context, she has acted for the Official Solicitor, local authorities, and family members. Carin has also represented local authorities and family members in cases involving contested applications to revoke LPAs.

Recently, Carin acted as a junior in a complex matter involving a patient detained under Section 3 of the MHA 1983 which was heard pursuant to the High Court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Carin is keen to expand her public law practice. She has a particular interest in judicial reviews involving healthcare and patient safety.

Carin has a busy inquest practice, with a particular focus on inquests with a healthcare or personal injury element. She represents a range of Interested Persons including families, Trusts, and medical practitioners.

Carin has experience of Article 2 inquests, with and without a jury, and regularly appears in complex inquests involving multiple interested parties. She has been instructed in inquests considering a range of issues including:

  • Paramedic treatment and emergency treatment
  • Delayed medical treatment and diagnosis
  • Complications arising from surgery
  • Prescription errors
  • Maternal death
  • Fatal accidents at work
  • Foreign deaths of UK nationals
  • Suicide

Carin represented Barts Health NHS Foundation Trust and Mid & South Essex NHS Trust in the Inquest into the death of Archie Battersbee, whose medical treatment was the subject of significant litigation.
