Between 2013 and 2016 Patrick Sadd was Counsel to the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry looking into the care of children in the Island since 1945. The Inquiry followed the world-wide publicity the Island attracted during the abuse investigation into the island’s children’s home at Haut de La Garenne. He was instructed on the basis of his extensive experience in child abuse claims going back to 2001. The Inquiry finished taking evidence in June 2016. The report was published in early 2017.

Patrick is now instructed as one of the Counsel to the national Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse chaired by Professor Alexis Jay.

He has long acted for abuse complainants both here and in Ireland arising out of a broad range of situations including religious orders, in children’s homes and schools, in foster care, teachers, families, in sporting and voluntary and media organisations. He has acted for vulnerable adults abused in long term care and for learning disabled children and young people, as well as in claims against local authorities for failing to remove sooner children at risk.

As part of his work in Ireland, he drafted a 20 page submission to the Irish Commission into Child Abuse in relation to Goldenbridge Industrial School for Girls.

That experience complements his clinical negligence practice: he is instructed regularly in claims arising out of still births as well as relating to the handling of psychiatric illness. He provided mediated advices in the Leicester Epilepsy Litigation looking into the negligent diagnosis of over 600 children. He acted for a family in the Inquest into the Gosport Hospital deaths. He has been instructed in medical device litigation – in the Trilucent Breast claims he was appointed damages assessor in disputed claims. He advised in the PIP breast implant cases. His understanding of clients is recognised in these areas and in his personal injury practice. On the basis of this experience he is instructed in claims suing barristers and solicitors said to have mishandled compensation claims.

In marked contrast, he is recognised as one of the leading barristers in the UK in European road transport regulation appearing regularly at public inquiries and in the Upper Tribunal, advising national transport operations on all aspects of road haulage and passenger regulation, and operators’ licensing.
