Robert Rhodes QC lectures on the Singapore Convention on Mediation

Robert Rhodes QC, at the request of the China Maritime Arbitration Commission, will be lecturing on the Singapore Convention on Mediation at the Forum on ADR in Shanghai on 5 November. The Singapore Convention is of potentially huge interest to businesses worldwide because, until this Convention, it was expensive and time-consuming to enforce international commercial mediation settlements in third countries.  The Singapore Convention (on which Robert has regularly lectured) is designed to overcome this problem, and to do for international commercial mediation settlements what the New York Convention has done for international arbitration awards, viz make enforcement in third countries quick and inexpensive. James Counsell QC and Ben Bradley appear in the High Court in sexual abuse claim against Manchester City FC

James Counsell QC and Ben Bradley represent eight victims in the High Court, seeking damages from Manchester City FC after suffering sexual abuse from one of the country’s most prolific sex offenders. James and Ben represent eight claimants who were subjected to sexual abuse by Barry Bennell whilst they were playing for Manchester City FC junior or ‘feeder teams’. Supreme Court dismiss appeal in FS Cairo (Nile Plaza) LLC v Lady Christine Brownlie

The Supreme Court has this morning dismissed the appeal of the Four Seasons hotel group, meaning that Lady Brownlie’s claims for personal injury and wrongful death arising out of the accident which killed her husband, Sir Ian Brownlie, in Egypt over 10 years ago, can proceed before the courts of England and Wales. The Court held by a majority (Lords Reed, Lloyd-Jones, Briggs and Burrows JJSC), that the jurisdictional gateway in tort claims pursuant to the civil procedure rules applies where a significant part of the damage is or will be sustained in England and Wales, notwithstanding initial or other damage also sustained outside the jurisdiction. John McKendrick QC appears in Bell v Tavistock in the Court of Appeal

John McKendrick QC (instructed by John Holmes at Hempsons) acted for the First and Second Interveners in Bell v Tavistock And Portman NHS Foundation Trust [2021] EWCA Civ 1363. On 17 September, the Court of Appeal held that doctors can decide whether children under 16 can give informed consent to puberty blocker use. This judgment reverses the High Court ruling that individuals under 16 normally lacked the capacity to give informed consent to the treatment of puberty blockers, which delays the onset of puberty.The appeal was brought by the Tavistock Trust (supported by John’s clients), which has operated a Gender Identity Development Service for patients up to the age of 18 suffering from gender dysphoria since 1989. Elaine Palser acts successfully for stylist and influencer, Caroline Stanbury, in the High Court

Elaine Palser, led by Andrew Trollope QC and instructed by RPC, acted successfully for personal stylist and influencer, Caroline Stanbury, in the High Court in Mark Reynolds (as liquidator of CSB123 Ltd) v Caroline Stanbury [2021] EWHC 2506 (Ch). The application against Ms Stanbury was described as “regrettable” and all allegations against her were dismissed in full. The application was brought against Ms Stanbury as a director of CSB 123 Ltd (“SC1”) under s.212 of the Insolvency Act 1986 (the “misfeasance” provision).
