There are plenty of lawsuits heading to the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court and the High Court, and The Lawyer has unveiled its top appeals and cases to look out for this year.
Outer Temple’s Charlotte Elves has been featured in The Lawyer’s Top 10 Appeals of 2026 for her involvement in Município De Mariana v BHP Group (UK) Limited & Ors. The case, commenced by 620,000 claimants after an environmental disaster in Brazil, has been one of the most closely watched disputes in the courts.
The case concerned an appeal by BHP against a High Court decision permitting a criminal contempt application to proceed. The contempt application allegations arose from claims that BHP procured and funded parallel Brazilian proceedings that were intended to interfere with the administration of justice by undermining and obstructing the participation of the Municipal claimants in the English Mariana Dam group litigation.
Charlotte Elves acted alongside Oliver Caplin KC and Alicia Lawson of Twenty Essex, and Andrew Higgins of Temple Garden Chambers, instructed by Pogust Goodhead.
