Courtney Step-Marsden and Joshua Cainer offered tenancy

We are delighted to offer tenancy to our outstanding pupils, Courtney Step-Marsden and Joshua Cainer, from 1st September.

After twelve months of hard work and excellent feedback at Outer Temple Chambers, we are delighted to announce that Courtney Step-Marsden and Joshua Cainer will join Chambers on 1st September, following pupillage.

Chief Executive Rebecca Priestley said “Many congratulations and a warm welcome to Courtney and Joshua, who join Outer Temple after demonstrating exceptional standards of excellence during their pupillages. They have faced the unprecedented challenge of a global pandemic shutting down the courts and turning the working world upside down with calm equanimity and resilience. I am sure they will meet all the challenges thrown at them during their no doubt glittering careers with the same degree of sangfroid and ‘can do’ attitude.”

Courtney’s time at Outer Temple Chambers has exposed her to a variety of practice areas including employment, pensions, and personal injury including with a cross border element. She has also gained experience in public and private law. She has carried out research, drafting and assisted on cases concerning disciplinary and regulatory, education and international law matters.

Courtney is a member of the Attorney General’s Junior Junior scheme.

Courtney read Law at Oxford University and has received many accolades and a scholarship during her time there. She has always actively promoted equal opportunities, teaching debating in schools in disadvantaged areas and representing disability groups during her studies.

Courtney said of the news, “I am delighted to have been offered tenancy at Outer Temple Chambers.  Throughout pupillage, I have experienced a wide variety of practice.  I would like to extend a special thanks to my pupil supervisors – Naomi Ling, Daniel Clarke, Oliver Powell, Alex Haines and Claire van Overdijk – who have taught me so much and have supported me throughout my time as a pupil, despite the challenges of COVID-19.  I look forward to building my practice supported by Chambers and the fantastic clerking team.”

Joshua Cainer

Joshua has most recently worked under the supervision of Oliver Powell specialising in business crime, commercial fraud and the regulation of financial services and commerce. This has also exposed him to building control regulation and maritime law which had an international law element.

He has a keen interest in public law matters having previously taught undergraduate students in Administrative Law as well as having assisted the Court of Appeal with a wide range of appellate cases relating to public law and human rights. During pupillage, Joshua had the opportunity to develop his interest in this area by assisting members of Chambers in a range of public law work including some transport cases.

Joshua was also supervised by Daniel Clarke and experienced a wide range of matters relating to personal injury and clinical negligence, with a particular emphasis on claims engaging issues of private international law. Notably, he assisted in the Court of Appeal hearing Brownlie (No. 2) v FS Cairo (Nile Plaza) LLC [2020] EWCA Civ 996.

His time with Naomi Ling and David E Grant exposed him to a wide range of employment work as well as pensions law and trusts law.

Joshua is another Oxbridge alumni, achieving a Double First in his BA(Hons) Law and a First in his LLM at Downing College, Cambridge University. He said of his offer, “I am delighted to have accepted an offer of tenancy from Outer Temple. I look forward to building a career in a chambers which combines the perfect balance between breadth and depth of legal specialism. I have learned a great deal during pupillage from the cross-fertilisation across those areas practised within Chambers and I am excited to develop my practice in such a warm, supportive and devoted community.”
