David Russell KC, Philip Punwar and Sean Yates provide training at DIFC Laws Certificate Programme 2024

David Russell KC, Philip Punwar and Sean Yates provided training at the DIFC Laws & Courts Procedures, a unit of the DIFC Laws Certificate Programme 2024, that took place between 7th May and 16th July 2024 at the DIFC Academy.

The DIFC Academy, in Association with Middlesex University Dubai and Outer Temple Chambers present the sixth edition of the DIFC Laws Certificate taking place between May to October 2024. This 6-month programme consists of nine units. It aims to provide education and training in common law and DIFC laws and courts procedures to civil law lawyers, DIFC Courts practitioners, Emirati advocates, In-house counsels and other professionals whose work involve exposure to common law systems and jurisdictions. 

David Russell KC, Philip Punwar and Sean Yates provided training at the second unit of the programme onDIFC Laws & Courts Procedures. This unit was divided into two parts; The DIFC Courts Procedures and DIFC Laws. David, Philip and Sean spoke at the following sessions:

  • Tuesday, 4th June – Philip Punwar led a session on the topic of ‘Interim Remedies’ (DIFC Courts Procedures)
  • Wednesday, 3rd July – David Russell KC spoke on ‘DIFC Trust and Foundations Law’ (DIFC Laws)
  • Tuesday, 16th July 2024 – Sean Yates closed the unit with the last session discussing ‘DIFC Contract Law‘ (DIFC Laws)

David Russell KC commenced legal practice in 1974. e currently practises in Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi (Outer Temple Chambers), Sydney (Ground Floor Wentworth Chambers) and Brisbane (Sir Harry Gibbs Chambers). He has acted for Commonwealth and State Governments as well as individuals and corporations. David was President of the Taxation Institute of Australia from 1993 to 1995, and of the Asia Oceania Tax Consultants’ Association from 1996 to 2000.

Philip Punwar is an English qualified practitioner with more than twenty-five years’ arbitration experience. His recent arbitral engagements have concerned real-estate Mega Projects in the Gulf, investment treaty claims arising out of the MENA and South Asia regions, aircraft charter agreements, concession agreements in the water sector and technology disputes in the finance and healthcare sectors. Philip has significant experience of the laws and practices of both civil and common law jurisdictions gained as counsel and arbitrator in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. 

Sean Yates specialises in international arbitration and civil and commercial litigation with a focus on construction and infrastructure, real estate, energy and natural resource disputes. More widely, Sean has experience in employment, fraud and regulatory, as well as substantial experience in the tourism, leisure and entertainment sectors.
