Event: Group Litigation Series 2025 – ‘How To Start A Group Action’

We are delighted to invite you to the first stop of our Group Litigation Series 2025 ‘How To Start A Group Action’ on Thursday, 6th February 2025 at Outer Temple Chambers.

You are invited to join our speakers Nathan Tavares KC and Harry Steinberg KC, alongside esteemed guest speakers Gene Matthews of Leigh Day and James Gibson of Hugh James as they analyse collective redress procedures and discuss the strategic choices to be made when commencing group litigation.

The panel will consider recent decisions on GLO certification, representative actions and common case management. The session will be chaired by Aliyah Akram of Outer Temple Chambers.

Speaker Bios

Nathan Tavares KC, Outer Temple Chambers

Nathan is a Head of Chambers and specialises in clinical negligence, catastrophic personal injury claims, product liability, and professional negligence. Nathan has acted in a number of group actions over the course of his career, and he has represented groups of claimants as well as defendants who are defending group claims. His first group action was in the Restrictive Practices Court where he represented employees of Ready Mix Concrete who were facing proceedings for price fixing. He has acted for a large group of claimants suing the MOD in relation to the negligent prescription of Lariam antimalarial medication. He has been involved in other claims against the MOD including Non-Freezing Cold Injury Litigation.

Harry Steinberg KC, Outer Temple Chambers

Harry specialises in leading large-scale group claims. He has been instructed in claims involving environmental damage, insurance, human-rights abuses, product liability and personal injury. Much of his work has an international law aspect and/or involves large groups, including acting for thousands of former and serving military personnel in three groups against the Ministry of Defence. Harry has specialised in industrial disease and mesothelioma for over a decade and is recognised in the directories as a leading silk. He has taken test cases to the Supreme Court and appeared in many of the landmark cases that have shaped this area of law. Chambers & Partners (2024) stated, “Harry brings unparalleled experience to the litigation”. His work also often involves cross-border litigation.

Aliyah Akram, Outer Temple Chambers

Aliyah is acknowledged as a leading junior in personal injury and industrial disease litigation. She is renowned for her expertise and experience in group litigation and has been involved in some of the largest group actions ever brought in the UK. Many of her cases have an international aspect and give rise to both jurisdictional issues and conflicts of laws. She has long established experience. She has developed a particular expertise in military group actions, including 3,500+ personnel with noise-induced hearing loss, 500+ personnel with non-freezing cold injuries and a human rights claim for 200+ personnel exposed to asbestos in Latvia.

Gene Matthews, Leigh Day

Gene is a Partner and Joint Head of the Human Rights Department at Leigh Day, specialising in group litigation involving consumer protection law, product liability and data protection cases. With over two decades of legal practice, Gene has represented thousands of individuals in high-profile cases, including the NOx emissions litigation against vehicle manufactures, defective medical device proceedings and multi-party data breach cases.

James Gibson, Hugh James

James is a Partner at Hugh James specialising in industrial and environmental disease litigation. James has particular experience in group and international litigation concerning claims for mesothelioma, lung cancer and non-malignant respiratory conditions and the issues of parent company liability and forum. James has been a lead solicitor in several industrial disease actions brought under group litigation orders and has pursued groups of claims on other collective bases. James is ranked by Chambers and Partners and recommended by Legal 500 for group litigation and personal injury work.
