Event: Integrity In Sport Seminar on 27th April 2023

You are invited to join Outer Temple Chambers and guests for an evening of talks around Integrity in Sport on Thursday 27th April 2023. This event will be held at Outer Temple Chambers and booking is required.

Louis Weston will be joined by fellow OTC sports barrister, Samuel Cuthbert, Alastair Campbell of Level Law and Aja Hall of British Horseracing Authority to discuss:

  • Integrity through technology
  • Assessing outcomes in football betting cases
  • Why betting evidence matters and the problems in obtaining that evidence

The event will be chaired, with occasional observations, by Louis Weston. The discussions will be followed by networking drinks in Chambers.

About the speakers

Louis Weston, Barrister

Louis Weston is a highly regarded Sports Law and Commercial litigator.

He has a wealth of experience in matters arising from sport, civil fraud, professional negligence, gambling and failed business ventures. He has acted for many years in Sports RegulationGovernance, Disciplinary CasesSafeguarding and Anti-Doping and is ranked as a leading junior in Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.  Louis acts and advises Sports Governing Bodies and Players in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia before sporting tribunals, courts and the CAS. 

Samuel Cuthbert, Barrister

Sam has a broad practice with specialisms in Sports Law and Personal Injury.

Sam acts for athletes, clubs and national governing bodies. His practice encompasses sports regulation, safeguarding, disciplinary cases, anti-doping cases, and commercial sports matters. He is regularly instructed in sports related inquests and sports injury disputes. Sam regularly speaks at events and conferences on legal issues arising in a sporting context. Previously, Sam worked in Milan at an international law firm advising on private, commercial, and sports law matters.

Aja Hall, BHA

Aja is Head of Regulation at The British Horseracing Authority.

Aja was called to the Bar in 2009 and spent some time at the criminal bar before joining the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 2012 as an in-house lawyer. The NMC is the largest regulator in Europe with over 750,000 registrants. In 2016 she became a senior lawyer dealing with high profile and complex cases. She defended the NMC in appeals before the High Court against both Registrants and the Professional Standards Authority.

Aja then spent time in General Councils’ office and has experience in the legal issues of large organisations. She joined the BHA as Head of Regulation in April 2022 and works with a large number of departments, giving legal advice and supporting in sound decision making which are led by the Rules of Racing. 

Alastair Campbell, Level Law

Alastair is an experienced disputes lawyer with a particular focus on sports law and arbitration. Alastair acts on behalf of the full spectrum of stakeholders in sport, including athletes, agents, rights holders and governing bodies, and has been appointed as arbitrator on judicial panels in a number of sports. This gives him an insight into every side of a dispute, including that of the decision-makers, and allows him to swiftly advise clients on the optimum strategy whatever the situation. Alastair has particular expertise in betting matters, having researched and authored Level’s comprehensive “Evening the Odds” report into FA betting cases.
