Event: Regulation in Football Seminar. Thursday, 21st September 2023

Join our Sports Team Members at Outer Temple Chambers for an evening of discussions on Regulation in Football.

You are invited to join OTC’s Sports Team members’ Sarah Crowther KC, Louis Weston and Samuel Cuthbert at Outer Temple Chambers for an evening of discussions on Regulation in Football with David Winnie of Burlingtons LLP, Lloyd Thomas of Brighton & Hove Albion and Daniel McDonagh of Charles Russell Speechlys LLP.

Topics of discussion will include: the FIFA Football Agent Regulations, the Bosman Ruling, central regulation in football, multi-club ownership models, and the uses and pitfalls of Rule K.

5pm – Introduction by Louis Weston outlining some of the key regulatory trends in football
5.15pm – Q&A session: Samuel Cuthbert will be interviewing David Winnie regarding regulation during his time as a professional player, and his reflections on regulation now he’s a lawyer at Burlingtons LLP
5.45pm – Panel session: Louis Weston will chair a discussion on football regulation with Dan McDonagh of Charles Russell Speechlys LLP, Lloyd Thomas of Brighton & Hove Albion, and Sarah Crowther KC of Outer Temple Chambers
6.25pm – Closing remarks by Louis Weston
6.30pm – Drinks and networking

About the speakers

Sarah Crowther KC, Barrister

Sarah has a broad practice with areas of focus in personal injuryprivate international lawclinical negligence and public law and discrimination cases. Her broader personal injury practice encompasses catastrophic injury, road traffic, insurance, employer’s liability, sport and asbestos-related illness claims. Sarah acts at High Court level for claimants and defendants.

Louis Weston, Barrister

Louis is a highly regarded Commercial and Sports Law litigator. He has a wealth of experience across commercial litigation with an emphasis on matters arising from sport, civil fraud, professional negligence, gambling and failed business ventures. He is regularly instructed to gain injunctive relief and freezing orders. In Sports Law he has acted for many years in Sports RegulationGovernance, Disciplinary CasesSafeguarding and Anti-Doping and is ranked as a leading junior in Chambers and Partners and Legal 500.

Samuel Cuthbert, Barrister

Samuel has a broad practice with specialisms in Sports LawCommercial Law & Professional Negligence,  Personal Injury & Clinical Negligence, Private International Law, Employment Law and Regulatory Law. 

Samuel is frequently instructed both as led junior counsel, and in his own right. Samuel has expertise in Sports Law, regularly acting on behalf of athletes, clubs and national governing bodies. Samuel is instructed in CAS proceedings, and is currently acting in a number of high-profile safeguarding matters before arbitral panels and in the High Court.

David Winnie, Partner & Head of Sport, Burlingtons LLP

David’s practice spans a wide range of transactional and regulatory areas of sports law. He specialises in commercial and regulatory advice to clients in the sports and media sectors. His experience includes acting for athletes and rights holders on sponsorship matters. He also regularly advises on governance issues in sport and on player contracts, football transfers and image rights structures.

David has acted for clients in cases before the Football Association’s (FA) Rule K Arbitration, the EFL Compensation Committee, FIFA’s Football Tribunal and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

Daniel McDonagh, Associate, Charles Russell Speechlys LLP

Dan specialises in contentious and regulatory matters in the sports sector, both in respect of commercial disputes and integrity issues. His experience includes acting for international sports federations in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, investigative regulatory work in football, and acting in FA Rule K disputes (both disciplinary and commercial). He has also spent time working in-house in the integrity team of a national sporting regulator.

Dan’s other experience includes disputes relating to defamation, data protection & privacy, and company/shareholder disputes – areas which often touch the world of sport.

Lloyd Thomas, General Counsel, Brighton & Hove Albion

Lloyd Thomas is the General Counsel at Brighton & Hove Albion. He is responsible for all legal matters at the club – from drafting and negotiating player, manager and commercial contracts, to providing regulatory and compliance advice.

Lloyd has worked in football his whole career. He qualified as a solicitor in the sports department of Squire Patton Boggs. He then moved to Arsenal where he worked in the legal department for four years. Lloyd then joined Brighton & Hove Albion as General Counsel in 2021.
