Outer Temple Chambers and its team members are recognised by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 as leaders in the field of group litigation.

Group Litigations or Group Claims usually involve a number of solicitors acting on behalf of hundreds or thousands of individuals (usually claimants) with a similar claim against the same Defendant(s). Proceeding with a claim in this manner provides greatly enhanced negotiating power and access to better resources than a smaller claim.

Due to the complexity of a group claim, solicitors and barristers on each side should be highly specialised in both group claim management and the particular area of law. Not all barristers are experienced in group litigation but Outer Temple Chambers has a team of experienced silks and juniors to aid in such cases. Given the size and value of previous claims, Outer Temple has built up unrivalled expertise in the logistical and tactical management of group litigation.

Our Group Litigation team is described as having “a good breadth of expertise across all calls.” Outer Temple does indeed have a breadth of expertise in the field of group litigation, with a portfolio of some of the highest profile personal injury, clinical negligence, employment, pensions and travel law cases. Our barristers have also acted in major product liability and financial services mis-selling claims.

Our Group Litigation team includes experienced barristers who also specialise in the following areas of law:

  • Clinical negligence
  • Discrimination
  • Employment
  • Environmental issues
  • Financial services
  • Health & Safety
  • Industrial Disease
  • Military injury claims
  • Pensions
  • Personal Injury
  • Product liability
  • Travel claims

Outer Temple Chambers is one of the broadest and most diverse sets in London and is able to source silks and juniors ‘in-house’ to cater for any issue that may arise in the course of a group claim, resulting in a seamless process for clients. The major law firms in this space repeatedly instruct our barristers across a range of areas of law.

We have acted in all of the high profile private sector mass claimant equal pay claims, both in the Employment Tribunal and the High Court, and public sector pension challenges.

In the former we act for tens of thousands of claimants in all the supermarket and various other retail sector claims (eg against Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons, Next). In the latter we act for the claimants (of whom there are again tens of thousands) in most, if not all, claims arising from the Government’s attempts to reform public sector pension provision (e.g. judges, firefighters, police, MOD police, probation officers, teachers, doctors, nurses and other NHS staff). We have been involved in these claims throughout their existence.
