The Employment Lawyers Association (ELA) is an apolitical organisation representing the views and interests of just over 6,000 specialist, qualified employment lawyers in the UK. This year’s refresher course ‘What’s New in Employment Law- 2026’ is aimed at those who have been out of practice for a period over the past year, or who are looking for a round-up of developments in 2025. The course flags up cases and other developments which will make a difference to the advice you would give to clients.
Gus Baker and Chevan Ilangaratne will be discussing the Employment Rights Act 2025 from 9:30am to 11:15am. This session will be delivered in two parts, with a 15-minute break half way. It will focus on the flagship Employment Rights Act 2025 that will introduce significant employment law reforms over the next two years. Gus and Chevan’s talk will cover:

Gus Baker’s practice focuses on employment, pensions, commercial litigation (including arbitration) and professional negligence disputes arising from his core practice areas. He has extensive experience in handling employment cases in the High Court, Employment Tribunal, and in appellate proceedings. Gus’ expertise covers a wide range of matters, including commercial employee competition and business protection disputes, whistleblowing and discrimination claims. Gus is frequently engaged to represent clients in cases that are exceptionally sensitive, or involve substantial sums.
Chevan Ilangaratne is a specialist Employment, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence law practitioner, having completed his pupillage solely in these areas of law. Chevan has developed considerable experience in employment law, having represented both claimants and respondents in a number of preliminary and final hearings in the ET, as well as in judicial mediation hearings and Dispute Resolution Appointments. He also brings with him an in-depth knowledge of the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 having worked for a whistleblowing charity as a Legal Adviser.
