International Financial Institution successful before its Administrative Tribunal in Greece

Last month, Alex Haines and Alexandra Sidossis successfully represented and appeared on behalf of the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (“BSTDB”), the Respondent in this case, before its Administrative Tribunal in Thessaloniki, Greece, where the BSTDB is headquartered.

This was the first time in more than one decade that a case had been heard by the Administrative Tribunal. All grounds of appeal were dismissed and the Tribunal found that no internal laws of the BSTDB had been breached.

Background

International Administrative Tribunals (“IATs”) are judicial bodies established by international organisations. They have the authority to settle disputes between international organisations and employees on employment matters.

IATs are international tribunals in the sense that they operate in the realm of the public international law system. The most well-known of these are the World Bank Administrative Tribunal, the International Labour Organisation Administrative Tribunal and the United Nations Tribunals (both Dispute and Appeals).
