James Counsell KC has been appointed as Disciplinary Panel Chair of the world famous Marylebone Cricket Club, owners of Lord’s.

We are delighted to announce that regulatory and disciplinary expert James Counsell KC has been appointed as Disciplinary Panel Chair to the world famous club, for an initial three-year term starting on 1 April 2025.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is the world’s most active cricket club, the owner of Lord’s Ground and the guardian of the Laws of the game. With over 18,000 Full and 6,000 Associate Members, the club is governed by members through various committees. The Club invests around £2 million in the game each year, supporting individuals, co-ordinating over 500 matches, and promoting the Laws and Spirit of Cricket.

James was appointed to the position due to his expertise in disciplinary work across the whole regulatory spectrum, including defending and prosecuting in the disciplinary tribunals of the General Medical Council, Lloyd’s of London, the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal and the Bar Disciplinary Tribunal. He has also acted in high-profile sports-related cases in sports as diverse as horse racing, Premier League football and karate.

James is a Joint Head of Chambers at Outer Temple Chambers and Head of Governance, dealing with internal disciplinary matters. He has been a Member of MCC since 1986 and is actively involved with his local cricket club, including being responsible for membership and staff issues/complaints.
