We are pleased to invite you to a virtual open day for the 4th edition of the ‘DIFC Laws Certificate’ programme where James Counsell QC will talk about Advocacy Skills.
The DIFC Academy of Law offer the Laws Certificate programme which aims to provide education and training in Common Law and DIFC laws and procedures to Emirati advocates, civil law trained lawyers and other professionals whose work involves exposure to common law systems and jurisdictions. This is produced in association with Middlesex University Dubai and Outer Temple Chambers.
The course consists of several sections that can be taken together as a whole or as individual components:
Unit 1- English Common Law by Middlesex University Dubai- Faculty of Law
English Legal System Principles of Common Law; Contract Law; Tort Law; Company Law; Employment Law; ADR, Arbitration; Data Protection Law; and Equity Law
Unit 2- DIFC Courts Procedures by DIFC legal practitioners
Overview of DIFC Courts and procedural topics
Unit 3- Advocacy Skills by Outer Temple Chambers
Court etiquette; trial advocacy and witness handling and examination; oral and written submissions and appeals advocacy
Unit 4- Legal Tech by Middlex University Dubai
Legal technology foundations
Unit 5- Tax Law by Aurifer team
UAE Tax Law; Applications of tax legislation; Implications of tax legislation for legal practitioners
Overview of ADR, Mediation; International Arbitration; Arbitration in the UAE

We are proud to be involved in this project as part of our ongoing commitment to the Academy of Law and our work in Dubai. Outer Temple members are regularly instructed in DIFC Court matters, with David Russell QC based permanently at Outer Temple’s office in the DIFC.
James Counsell QC will be speaking at the Open Day. James has a commercial practice with a particular emphasis on financial services, with experience of disputes in the UK and overseas, particularly in the Middle-East. He recently acted for the successful appellant in a high profile, law-changing appeal where the Court went against its previous practice and refused to impose a stay in a case where one party had litigated in the DIFC court and the other in the local courts.
