The core aim of this guide is to assist criminal and regulatory prosecutors in structuring and prosecuting bribery-in-sport cases as well as to foster cooperation between law enforcement agencies, criminal justice authorities and sports organisations.
Bribery is a significant and diverse threat to sport, ranging from bribery related to sports governance and the duties of public officials to bribery related to the manipulation of sports competitions involving players and referees. Past cases, including those involving international sports organizations and major sports events, are used in the guide to illustrate this range. This guide examines the scope of bribery in sport and challenges related to prosecuting those cases.
This guide also provides guidance in relation to the preparation of case briefs and charges in connection with bribery in sport, including with regard to considering potential defences and how to rebut them, and the comprehensive understanding of the rules and structures of sport needed to do this.
