On 18th August 2022, it was announced that the Queen has appointed Michael Anthony Bowes QC to be a Circuit Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dominic Raab MP and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon.
The Lord Chief Justice has deployed Michael to the Western Circuit, based at Portsmouth Combined Court Centre with effect from 19 September 2022. He will be known as His Honour Judge Bowes QC.
Michael was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1980 and took Silk in 2001. He was appointed as a Recorder in 1999.
Michael has been a valued member of Chambers since 2006. He is highly regarded as an expert in civil and criminal “cross-over” work and was repeatedly recommended by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 UK.
He was a Head of Chambers between 2012 and 2020. James Counsell QC, who succeeded him as Head of Governance, congratulated Michael on his appointment, saying “The Western Circuit’s gain is certainly our loss and we will all miss him very much. He gave chambers many years of dedicated service as a Head of Chambers and as Head of Governance.” Rebecca Priestley, CEO, added “Michael will be a huge loss to Chambers as a leading light of the Business Crime team, but he will be a brilliant judge.”
Michael Bowes QC will now cease practising as a barrister. Outer Temple Chambers has a well established and highly regarded Business Crime and Regulatory practice and if you would like to find out more about our team, please contact Colin Bunyan on +44 (0)20 7427 4886.
