New women leaders at ICC Canada Arbitration Committee

International Chambers of Commerce, Canada (ICC Canada) has announced new women leaders of its arbitration committee and held a dinner to honour leading arbitrator Marc Lalonde QC – who received praise from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among others.

The committee said that it has appointed Tina Cicchetti as its first female chair and Janet Walker as vice-chair who will take over as chair after Cichetti’s two-year term ends, meaning the leadership will be female for the next four years.

Barry Leon, an arbitrator at Arbitration Place and former Commercial Court judge in the British Virgin Islands who chaired ICC Canada from 2011 to 2014, describes Janet Walker, as an “energetic and thoughtful leader” who commands respect from many leading figures in international arbitration and other areas of law.

The ICC Canada Arbitration Committee works with the Canadian government to ensure it is up-to-date with the latest arbitration legislation so that Canadian businesses can flourish. The committee also hosts conferences on international arbitration, promotes Canadian cities as potential seats for arbitration and serves as a link between Canadian arbitration practitioners and the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, the ICC’s rule-making and research body.

Janet Walker, CD, JD, DPhil, FCIArb, is based in Toronto at Arbitration Place and in London, UK at Outer Temple Chambers. She is professor of law (past associate dean) at Osgoode Hall Law School, a member of the Ontario Bar, and licensed legal consultant of the New York State Bar.
