We are pleased to announce that a team of six members of Outer Temple Chambers will provide advocacy training within the Certificate in Common Law and DIFC Courts Practice programme in Dubai. The DIFC Academy of Law have launched this course for Emirati Advocates and other civil law trained lawyers, in-house counsel, and legal professionals seeking to diversify their skills and enhance their professional development. John McKendrick QC, instructed by Hannah Taylor of Bevan Brittan, appeared for an NHS Trust in a complex medical treatment case before Mr Justice Keehan. Judgment was handed down on 30 August 2018 after several days of oral evidence and submissions. The parties accepted aspects of the patient’s proposed care plan should be made, however, the judge ruled that CPR continued to be in the patient’s best interests, despite her frail condition. The case has been the subject of a number of media reports such as Daily Mail or ITV.

John and Alex have been invited by the Bar Council to speak at the first English Law Week in Mexico, a joint initiative between the Law Society and Bar Council. On 3 September, John will speak on the regulation of Fintech and his experiences as the Attorney General of Anguilla responsible for the Anguilla Utility Token Act, the first legislation to regulate utility tokens. On 4 September, John will chair two sessions on combating corruption and Alex will speak at the same sessions on corruption in the context of his experience of sanctions and Multilateral Development Banks. John McKendrick QC will return to full time practice at Outer Temple Chambers on 14 July 2018, with a wealth of experience after having served as the Attorney General and DPP of the Caribbean island of Anguilla between 2016 and 2018. John was called to the BVI in 2013 and, as a fluent Spanish speaker, he has long-standing connections across the Caribbean and wider Latin America. After an open competition, John McKendrick QC will replace Rupert Jones as Attorney General for Anguilla. The effective exercise of John’s mandate will start on 1 September this year and is expected to last for two years. John is a highly experienced litigator and adviser with a diverse practice distinguished by his formidable advocacy, his pragmatic hands-on approach and his ability to build relationships with clients. He was appointed a part time judge at the age of 34 and took silk at 39. Being a versatile advocate with a diverse practice, he works in the UK, across Latin America and in the Caribbean. John has recently visited Anguilla in order to meet his future colleagues and other stakeholders.

In recognition of their pro bono work for Barnardo’s, John McKendrick QC and Katarina Sydow were invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace on 12 May 2016, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the charity’s foundation. John and Katarina have provided advice and training to Barnardo’s and were delighted to participate in the event, which recognised the work of Barnardo’s staff and volunteers in improving the lives of vulnerable children. Outer Temple Chambers has a strong commitment to pro bono work and members of Chambers are happy to support such worthwhile causes.

John McKendrick QC is appearing in the Supreme Court on 26 April 2016, on behalf of Mr Lee Hirons, the appellant. The issue in the case is whether the recall of the appellant to hospital under s.42(3) Mental Health Act 1983 was unlawful and should entitle him to relief, because he was not given adequate reasons at the time the recall warrant was executed, nor within 72 hours in breach of the applicable policy of the Secretary of State. Mr Lee Hirons was made the subject of a restricted order under the Mental Health Act 1983. A few weeks after his conditional discharge from hospital a warrant was executed for his recall. At the invitation of the United Nations, John addressed a major event in Guatemala City on 1 April 2016. He spoke alongside the Guatemalan minister for Government, Sr. Francisco Rivas, the British Charge d’Affaires, Mr Andrew Tate and various international experts. The purpose of the seminar was to strengthen Guatemalan efforts against illicit trade and to strengthen law enforcement organisations and the rule of law. John has worked across Latin America for many years and speaks Spanish.

At the invitation of the British Embassies, John has been working in both Tegucigalpa, Honduras and San Salvador, El Salvador. John has delivered a series of high level presentations to public officials on the rule of law, anti-corruption and anti-contraband measures. His presentation alongside the British Ambassador, Mr Bernhard Garside and two UN officials has been reported in the media. For further information, please see El mundo.
