Certificate in Common Law and DIFC Courts Practice

We are pleased to announce that a team of six members of Outer Temple Chambers will provide advocacy training within the Certificate in Common Law and DIFC Courts Practice programme in Dubai. The DIFC Academy of Law have launched this course for Emirati Advocates and other civil law trained lawyers, in-house counsel, and legal professionals seeking to diversify their skills and enhance their professional development. Williams v The Trustees of Swansea University Pension & Assurance Scheme & Another [2018] UKSC 65

Keith Bryant QC and Saul Margo successfully represented the Trustees of Swansea University Pension and Assurance Scheme and another before the Supreme Court. Facts The case was about the interpretation of ‘treats…unfavourably’ under s.15(1) of the Equality Act 2010 (‘EA 2010’) which reads as follows: ‘A person (A) discriminates against a disabled person (B) if – (a) A treats B unfavourably because of something arising in consequence of B’s disability, and (b) A cannot show that the treatment is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim’ (emphasis added). Mr Williams was ‘disabled’ within the meaning of s.6 EA 2010. He was employed by Swansea University from 12 June 2000 until he retired for ill-health reasons on 30 June 2013, aged 38.…

Outer Temple in Dubai for Cirque du Loi

Members of Outer Temple Chambers and the director, Steve Graham, are in Dubai this week for the major legal social event of the year. The quaintly named “Cirque du Loi”, the annual legal gala dinner now in its third year, is “an all in celebration of the Dubai Legal Community for the benefit of the DIFC Courts Pro Bono programme”. Heads of Chambers, Andrew Spink QC and Michael Bowes QC are joined by Keith Bryant QC, Michael Patchett-Joyce, Benjimin Burgher, Ali Almihdar, David Russell QC, and Samir Salloum. Successful pension scheme rectification claim

Three members of Outer Temple Chambers’ pensions team appeared before Sales J in the Chancery Division on 30 January 2013. MAN Truck and Bus UK Ltd applied successfully for summary judgment in its claim for rectification of the Rules of the MAN UK Pension Scheme. MAN is the latest in a series of successful claims for rectification of pension scheme documentation including IAC (involving, Richard Hitchcock, James Rickards, Keith Bryant and David Grant) and IBM (involving Andrew Spink QC and Nicolas Stallworthy QC).
