Seven members of Outer Temple Chambers will be involved in the ‘Advanced Advocacy Skills’ training, part of the DIFC Laws Certificate Programme 2025 in October at the DIFC Academy, Dubai. The DIFC Academy have invited Outer Temple Chambers to deliver the Advanced Advocacy Skills course as part of their DIFC Laws Certificate Programme 2025. This course will be presented by six KCs and barristers, of Outer Temple Chambers in association with the DIFC Courts, including one member acting as a mock judge. Fiona Horlick KC and Oliver Powell KC successfully argued for a costs order in the sum of £494,024.18 for the CEO of a care home provider. Background: Between 2016 and 2017, 5 service users, who were residents at two care homes owned by a care provider, passed away. It was the Crown’s case that the care home provider failed to discharge a duty under s.3 HSWA 1974 on 5 occasions, and that the CEO had consented or connived in the commission of those offences, or that the alleged offences were attributable to his neglect. From the outset of the investigation, the CEO vehemently refuted the allegations, and the matter was listed for a 10-week trial at Teesside Crown Court. Prior…

Following service of a 27-page Defence Statement, expert report and written representations, Cheshire Fire Rescue Authority (‘CFRA’) agreed to offer no evidence against their client. Following a recommendation by the Lord Chancellor, The Right Honourable Shabana Mahmood MP, The King has approved her recommendation that Oliver Powell and Ben Bradley should both be appointed His Majesty’s Counsel. The King’s Counsel Selection Panel made its recommendations to the Lord Chancellor after considering very carefully the evidence from application forms, assessments, and interviews with applicants. After a 4 ½ week trial, a jury unanimously convicted Intrada Ships Management Ltd of failing to take all reasonable steps to secure that a ship was operated in a safe manner. Background On 13 December 2021, at about 3.25am UK time, the Scot Carrier, a UK registered general cargo vessel, and the Karin Høj, a Danish registered barge, were in the Baltic Sea just off the South coast of Sweden.
