The 6th Annual World Congress of Ocean (WCO-2017) will be held on 3-5th November 2017 in Shenzhen, China. Its theme this year will be “Our Ocean, Our Future”. The event will take place at the same time as Aquaculture and Fisheries-2017, also held in Shenzhen. Robert Rhodes QC of Outer Temple Chambers, who is often a keynote speaker at ADR conferences in China and Hong Kong, has this time been invited by the Asian Mediation Association to present at the 4th Asian Mediation Conference. Robert Rhodes QC explains for MyBarrister the advantages of using mediation in order to resolve disputes. He states that the process of mediation can be really successful and a satisfying solution can be reached by parties if they appoint a skilled mediator and are able to “live with a negotiated settlement”. Robert Rhodes QC was the first speaker at the joint Revenue Bar Association / Criminal Bar Association seminar on tax evasion, held earlier this week. Robert spoke about the Revenue’s approach to tax evasion, and how it had become much more prosecution-oriented than in the 10 years when he had been Standing Counsel to the Inland Revenue before taking silk. He discussed the civil and criminal paths that the Revenue took, and their consequences. He also dealt with the Revenue disclosure facilities for errant taxpayers, including the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility which, over its 6 years of existence, raised billions of pounds for the Revenue. Outer Temple Chambers barristers recently participated in the 2016 COMBAR North American Meeting, which was held in Venice, Italy, from Thursday 31 March to Friday 1 April 2016. The FRC has appointed Robert Rhodes QC to chair a Tribunal that will decide a complaint against the large accountancy firm, Mazars LLP, and one of its partners, arising from pension advice given in 2007. Robert Rhodes QC previously chaired the Tribunal that heard complaints in the proceedings brought by the Accountancy Investigation and Discipline Board relating to the collapse of the publicly quoted company Mayflower Plc.
