Chambers and Partners UK Bar 2025 have today launched their 2025 Guide and we are delighted to share the highlights from this year’s rankings, including two Band 1 awards for our Pensions Law team and Travel Law team. The Employment Tribunal has handed down judgment in Thandi and Others v Next PLC. Andrew Short KC and Gus Baker represented the successful claimants. Following a three-week hearing in May 2024, the Employment Tribunal rejected the Respondents’ argument that paying comparators who worked in majority male warehouses a better hourly rate and better allowances than individuals who worked in retail (who are overwhelmingly female) due to market forces was a proportionate means of meeting a legitimate aim. The judgment means that the equal terms clauses implied into retail workers contracts are effective. Accordingly, thousands of individuals will be entitled to recover arrears of pay from 2012 to date. The claim is the first of a number retail equal pay cases…

Harry Steinberg KC and Aliyah Akram have achieved a groundbreaking agreement in this group action on behalf of thousands of military personnel who suffered noise induced hearing loss whilst in service. The settlement was approved by the High Court on Monday 8 July. Working with Simon Ellis and the Military team at Hugh James Solicitors, Harry and Aliyah negotiated this landmark agreement in which the MoD has made significant concessions on issues of limitation and duty of care. Since the MoD accepts that the Hugh James group of claimants have been negligently exposed to excessive noise during service, thousands of former servicemen and women will now be able to claim compensation for their injury. Robert Dickason of Outer Temple Chambers and Leigh-Ann Mulcahy KC of Fountain Court Chambers acted for the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in litigation arising from the use of hormonal pregnancy test (HPT) tablets taken to diagnose pregnancy in the 1950s-1970s. In this group litigation, over 200 claims were issued against the pharmaceutical manufacturers of two HPTs (Primodos and Amenorone Forte), as well as against the Government on the basis that it was responsible for safe regulation of HPTs in the 1950s-1970s. The claimants maintained that HPTs taken during pregnancy had caused them to suffer congenital malformations, miscarriage and/or stillbirth. Previous litigation brought in the 1970s-80s had also sought to prove that HPTs caused congenital malformations, but…
