Louis Weston, Head of the OTC Sports Group has been appointed as a Member of the International Boxing Association’s Dispute Resolution Chamber a division of the IBA’s Boxing Independent Integrity Unit.  The Boxing Independent Integrity Unit (BIIU) deals with all ethical and disciplinary issues, as well as conducting eligibility checks and selecting candidates for elections and providing education and development services. Louis Weston has been appointed as a member of the The Dispute Resolution Chamber (a division of the BIIU), for 4 years by the managing board. Each member of the DRC must meet eligibility criteria to ensure high level standard of reputation. Outer Temple’s Sam Cuthbert and David Seligman, of Brandsmiths, discuss the recent announcement that Juventus have been banned from this season’s Europa Conference League by Uefa for breaching FFP rules. In this short vlog, Sam and David talk about the recent decision, by Uefa to ban Juventus from the Europa Conference League and issue a fine of £17.14m for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP rules) in transactions between 2012-2019. Although Juventus have issued a statement rejecting the allegations, they have accepted the penalties. Meanwhile, Chelsea FC have also been fined for breaching the same rules. Outer Temple’s Fiona Horlick KC appointed to British HorseRacing Authority’s independent Judicial Panel for the 2023-2026 term. The Judicial Panel is established by the BHA as the pool of individuals from which the Disciplinary Panel, Appeal Board and Licensing Committee are drawn by the Judicial Panel Chair. Fiona Horlick KC was appointed to the Legal Chairs in the Panel amongst other members. She was brought up around horseracing as her grandfather was closely involved in horseracing both in Ireland and the UK as an amateur rider, manager and handicapper. Louis Weston, who leads the Sports Law Group, acted for the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board with Caoimhe Daly, BL, in opposing the appeal of Ronan McNally against being found in breach and the length of his 12 year suspension, the longest in Irish racing.  The IHRB’s Appeal Body has dismissed the appeal against breach and suspended the last 4 years of the suspension to give Mr McNally ‘opportunity and motivation to mend his ways’, and awarded the IHRB its costs.…

Louis Weston acted for WPBSA in the prosecution of 10 snooker players for match-fixing and betting offences

Louis Weston, who leads the Sports Law Group, acted for the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) in the prosecution of 10 snooker players for match-fixing and betting offences. The case which was heard over 4 days in April and May 2023, has resulted in each of the 10 players being found in breach of the WPBSA Member Rules and suspensions being imposed on all of them.  The principal offenders Liang Wenbo and Li Hang both have been banned for life and other players suspended for periods of between 1.75 and 5.33 years.  These are the heaviest sanctions in the sport of snooker, and follow on from its most complicated and substantial case and investigation. We are thrilled to announce that Outer Temple’s Robert Rhodes KC and Anthony Lo Surdo SC FCIArb have been reappointed as mediators of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Anthony has also been reappointed as a CAS arbitrator. Robert and Anthony have been reappointed by the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) to this position in Lausanne, Switzerland for a period of four years and have been chosen for their specialist knowledge of arbitration and sports law. Head Coach of the Russian Rhythmic Team, Irina Viner, faces a lengthy ban after a decision in disciplinary proceedings by Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF). Louis Weston acted on behalf of GEF. The GEF Disciplinary Commission Panel sanctioned the head coach of Russian rhythmic gymnastics, Ms Viner with a two year suspension and issued her Russian Member Federation, Artistic Gymnastics Federation of Russia, with a warning.
