The English Law Day is run in collaboration with the Bar Council of England & Wales, the concept of which was established over 10 years ago and was first run in the CIS jointly with the Law Society of England & Wales.
The one day forum will focus on topics such as Arbitration in Türkiye and the wider Eurasian region – local perspectives; Resolving disputes through the eyes of a company; Dispute resolution, enforcement and finances, unlocking value in claims, judgments and awards / damages masterclass; Impact of sanctions on trade, transactions, contracts and disputes; The Psychology of Arbitration; and Combating corruption and fraud through freezing orders, investigations, private prosecutions etc.
Oliver Powell will be speaking alongside Denis Almakaev of Level Legal Services at the second session between 11:30am and 12:30pm on ‘Resolving disputes through the eyes of a company’, moderated by Daniel Barton of Alvarez & Marsal.
Alex Haines and Joshua Ray of Outer Temple Chambers will be speaking alongside Etienne Epron of Epron Quivey & Associes, Matthew Walker of Raedas, Doran Doeh of 36 Group and Lidia Goshkova of Pepeliaev Group on the 4th session of the day on the topic of ‘Impact of sanctions on trade, transactions, contracts and disputes’ from 14:30pm to 15:30pm. This session will be moderated by Gizem Apler.
John McKendrick KC of Outer Temple Chambers will act as a moderator for the final session of the day from 16:45pm and 18:00pm with Shantanu Majumdar KC, Anton Alexandrov of Monastyrsky, Zyuba, Stepanov & Partners, Dr. Dogan Gultutan of Baker McKenzie and Berceste Elif Duranay speaking on the topic of ‘Combating corruption and fraud through freezing orders, investigations, private prosecutions etc.’

John practises in public and commercial law. After taking silk in his late thirties, he has led teams before the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, the Queen’s Bench Division, Chancery Division, Family Division, the Commercial Court, the Court of Protection, the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, the Privy Council, the Scottish courts and in many arbitrations. He has been involved in many high profile cases.
Oliver undertakes instructions that involve the regulation of business activity and commerce. His practice encompasses: asset forfeiture & civil recovery; business crime; civil fraud; corporate investigations; financial services; health, safety & environment; maritime regulatory law; and sanctions & export controls. Oliver is routinely instructed in matters with an international element and usually cases involving allegations of dishonesty, sharp practice or breach of regulations.
Alex is a barrister called to both the English and Irish Bars and a US-qualified attorney admitted to the Bars of New York and Washington DC. He is a specialist in international law and sanctions, with rare expertise in the law of international organisations (IOs). Alex litigates before international courts and tribunals, mostly in Washington DC, New York City, London and the regional hubs for IOs such as Geneva, Vienna, Jeddah and Addis Ababa. The cases he has been instructed in have involved more than 40 IOs.
Josh is a highly experienced advocate who represents clients in complex commercial disputes and financial crime investigations. He is also regularly engaged to provide specialized advice to international companies on UK and US sanctions and export control issues. A dual qualified American attorney and English barrister, he has argued in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, the federal district courts in New York, Boston, and Chicago, New York State court, and the English High Court. He has also presented cases before arbitral tribunals in London and New York.
