The English Law Forum conference will focus on the promotion and enhancement of English legal services, with a particular emphasis on International Arbitration, Dispute Resolution, Sanctions and the Rule of Law.
The conference will kick off at 10:00am to 17:30pm followed by a drinks reception and networking.
Outer Temple’s team of experts will be speaking on 7 different topics:
International Arbitration/ Institutions (11:05am – 11:40am)
John McKendrick KC and Alex Haines of Outer Temple Chambers will be speaking alongside Barry Coulter and Ruslan Ughrelidze discussing institutions; LCIA and London background stats; Why London?; absence of corruption, enforcement availability of High Court; Arbitration clauses: what works and what doesn’t; and, Choosing arbitrator and seat.
English Contract, Commercial Law, Trusts and Tax (11:55am – 12:50pm)
Henry Reid will be speaking alongside Jason Parker, Barry Coulter and Henry Mainwaring. The panel will discuss basic tenets of English Law, the use of English Law, why is it important; and the commercial aspect, trusts, tax; London as a commercial hub and its prominence; and links to other jurisdictions.
Jurisdictional challenges (12:50pm – 13:20pm)
Outer Temple’s Oliver Powell will be speaking alongside Anthony Metzer KC and Henry Mainwaring. Topics discussed will include selecting the best forum; English Court advantages; and key considerations.
Sanctions Regime (14:20pm – 15:20pm)
Oliver Powell, Alex Haines and Henry Reid will discuss the Sanctions Regime focusing on what, how and why; Sanctions in International context; and how it impacts business and legal representation.
Asset tracing Intricacies (15:35pm – 16:10pm)
Oliver Powell, together with Irakli Adeishvili will discuss Asset tracing Intricacies highlighting the role of the civil courts in asset recovery; identifying, locating and preserving the debtor’s assets; and invalidation of sham transactions.
Rule of Law and Judicial Independence (16:10pm – 16:40pm)
John McKendrick KC, alongside Anthony Metzer KC will focus on topics including Judge as well as Practitioner; Independence and Impartiality; and what makes a good Judge.
Enforcement of Judgments (16:40pm – 17:05pm)
Oliver Powell and Nina Bakakuri will give the last talk of the session on the discussing the methods of enforcing judgments both the Georgian perspective and the English perspective; freezing injunctions; and other interim measures.
The sessions will be followed by a Q&A from all speakers.
Closing remarks will be given by John McKendrick KC, Ruslan Ughrelidze, Barry Coulter and David Asatiani.

John practises in public and commercial law. After taking silk in his late thirties, he has led teams before the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, the Queen’s Bench Division, Chancery Division, Family Division, the Commercial Court, the Court of Protection, the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, the Privy Council, the Scottish courts and in many arbitrations. He has been involved in many high profile cases.
Oliver undertakes instructions that involve the regulation of business activity and commerce. His practice encompasses: asset forfeiture & civil recovery; business crime; civil fraud; corporate investigations; financial services; health, safety & environment; maritime regulatory law; and sanctions & export controls. Oliver is routinely instructed in matters with an international element and usually cases involving allegations of dishonesty, sharp practice or breach of regulations.
Alex is a barrister called to both the English and Irish Bars and a US-qualified attorney admitted to the Bars of New York and Washington DC. He is a specialist in international law and sanctions, with rare expertise in the law of international organisations (IOs). Alex litigates before international courts and tribunals, mostly in Washington DC, New York City, London and the regional hubs for IOs such as Geneva, Vienna, Jeddah and Addis Ababa. The cases he has been instructed in have involved more than 40 IOs.
Henry’s practice covers a wide array of commercial, corporate and financial services matters with an emphasis on commercial litigation, contentious and non-contentious financial services, regulatory investigations, fintech, sanctions and banking law. Since moving to the Bar in 2022, Henry has been ranked by Legal 500 as a “Rising Star” in both Banking and Finance and Financial Services Regulation as well as a Leading Junior in the field of Crypto and Blockchain assets.
