Moderator: Lord Mance

The branch is honoured to have Lord Mance, former Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, moderating the event.
Tickets are free but limited, and will be allocated on a first come basis, therefore those who wish to attend are encouraged to register quickly. The debate will be centred around a fictitious cryptocurrency dispute, with a copy of the case study being made available to attendees upon registration.
The debate will start at 6pm on Thursday 17th February and will be held at Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP, 125 Wood St, London, EC2V 7AW. A drinks reception will follow from 7pm to 8.30pm. In person registration will end by close of business on Tuesday 15 February 2022.
This event is organised by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and may be offered as a hybrid event subject to demand and circumstances.

Lord Mance was Deputy President of the Supreme Court until 2018, having sat as a Commercial Judge from 1993, in the Court of Appeal from 1999, in the House of Lords from 2005 and in the then newly created Supreme Court from 2009. He practises now from 7KBW as an arbitrator in commercial and investor-state arbitrations and expert witness, as well as sitting on appeals in the Singapore International Commercial Court and being Chief Justice of the Astana International Commercial Court.
He is co-chair of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law and was from 2009 until 2021 Chair of the International Law Association. He is a member of the Senate of the European Law Institute and, as a German speaker, President of the British-German Jurists Association.
Stephen Doherty is a barrister at Outer Temple Chambers, practicing in international arbitration and litigation. His work is predominantly focussed on commercial disputes, particularly in the Middle East, where he has been involved in a number of significant recent cases involving conflicts of jurisdiction, interim applications in support of arbitrations, and on the application of the Quincecare duty in phishing fraud.
Chloë Bell is a barrister at Outer Temple Chambers and was, in a former life, a judicial assistant to Lord Mance when he was then Deputy President of the UK Supreme Court. She is ranked as a leading barrister in Cryptocurrency law in Chambers and Partners 2022 (the first ever cryptocurrency section of the directories) and has been involved in some significant cases in this developing area of law, particularly relating to injunctive relief, jurisdiction and applicable law. She also advises on a wide range of cryptocurrency disputes in a range of forums including litigation and arbitration.
Tope Adeyemi is a barrister and arbitrator practising from 33 Bedford Row Chambers in London. Dual qualified in England & Wales and Nigeria, her practice focuses on Regulatory Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of its London Branch Committee, Tope is regularly appointed to act as sole arbitrator in commercial disputes. She has particular expertise in consumer finance disputes and related regulatory matters having formerly been a Financial Ombudsman.
Charlotte Hill is an experienced commercial disputes practitioner at Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP. She advises on a broad range of complex, high-value multijurisdictional disputes relating to financial services, company disputes, corporate insolvency and civil fraud. She has specialist expertise in digital assets where she advises clients about cryptocurrencies and blockchain disputes. Recognised as being ‘tenacious … and a real force of nature’ and an ‘opponent-whisperer’, Charlotte is said to be ‘brilliant at case management and marshalling evidence’ with ‘a particular talent for sniffing out the best pieces of evidence in a case’.
Jaak Poldma is an associate in White & Case’s Dispute Resolution group based in London. He is dual-qualified (England & Wales and New York) and represents clients in litigation and international arbitration. Since 2018, Jaak has actively participated on blockchain and cryptocurrency matters, representing a FinTech company in a shareholder dispute, representing a shareholder in a dispute related to DeFi projects, and advising clients and speaking on cryptocurrency regulations and litigation risks.
