Pensions expert Philip Stear joins Outer Temple Chambers

Outer Temple Chambers are delighted to announce that pensions partner and expert, Philip Stear has accepted an offer to join Chambers in the autumn of 2018. Philip has specialised in pensions law at Travers Smith for over 20 years, becoming a partner there in 2005.

Philip will join Outer Temple as a full member of Chambers towards the end of 2018 on being called to the Bar. Philip is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers (“APL”) Main Committee and frequent speaker at APL events. Chambers UK ranks Philip in Band Two of the London “leading individuals”: he “has an enormous mind for legal work, great ability and is charming to deal with“, according to Chambers UK sources. At Travers Smith, he provides employers and trustees with all aspects of day-to-day pensions law advice, as well as advising on exceptional events like scheme merger and segregation. He also has wide experience of pensions litigation and cases in front of the Pensions Ombudsman.

Philip will be a valuable addition to the Outer Temple team both domestically and internationally.

Joint Head of Chambers Andrew Spink QC commented: “Philip is one of the country’s leading pensions lawyers and we are very pleased that he will be joining the specialist Pensions Group at Outer Temple Chambers. Philip’s particular technical pensions expertise supports our mainstream pension work and bolsters our team in providing clients with a fully comprehensive service across pension law issues“.

Philip commented: “I am delighted to be joining Outer Temple Chambers. I have had the good fortune at Travers Smith to work in an excellent team, and the pensions practitioners at Outer Temple have the same hallmark: high quality lawyers who are also a cohesive team.  I have enjoyed working with them over the years as an instructing solicitor, and am very excited that I will now be working alongside them as a barrister.”

Travers Smith partner and Head of Pensions Daniel Gerring commented: “We would like to congratulate Philip on his move to Outer Temple Chambers. Philip enjoys an enviable reputation as a lawyer of great intellect and experience. He has made a valued contribution to the Travers Smith pensions practice over a long period and will be missed. We have every confidence that Philip will thrive at the Bar and he joins Outer Temple Chambers with our very best wishes.”
