Philip Punwar is a contributor to The MENA Leading Arbitrators’ Guide to International Arbitration, published in 2023. In this capacity, he has been invited to join a panel session jointly organised by The Guide’s editors and the CIArb on ‘Arbitrating in the MENA: Lessons from Practice’ on Thursday, 30 January 2025 from 8:30am to 11:00am in Dubai.
This seminar will look into some topical issues in MENA arbitration focusing on advocacy, freezone arbitration, public policy, construction arbitration, the role of expert witnesses and force majeure/hardship/unforeseen events.
The MENA Leading Arbitrators’ Guide to International Arbitration provides a unique insight into how leading arbitrators of the Middle East and North Africa approach a number of core procedural and substantive law issues in arbitrations seated in the MENA region. The CIArb is a global professional body with members from diverse geographies, backgrounds and professional disciplines all with one thing in common – a desire to advance effective dispute resolution.
Philip Punwar will speak on the topic of ‘Advocacy in Arbitration’ in line with his Chapter titled Advocates and Advocacy in ‘The MENA Leading Arbitrators’ Guide to International Arbitration’.

Philip Punwar is an English qualified practitioner with more than twenty-five years’ arbitration experience. His recent arbitral engagements have concerned real-estate Mega Projects in the Gulf, investment treaty claims arising out of the MENA and South Asia regions, aircraft charter agreements, concession agreements in the water sector and technology disputes in the finance and healthcare sectors.
