Silk Appointments: Oliver Powell and Ben Bradley

We are delighted to announce that Oliver Powell and Ben Bradley have been elevated to the ranks of King’s Counsel (Silk) in the 2024 King’s Counsel competition

Appointments to King’s Counsel do not come easy and are offered to a very carefully selected shortlist of applicants just once a year. Following a recommendation by the Lord Chancellor, The Right Honourable Shabana Mahmood MP, The King has approved her recommendation that Oliver Powell and Ben Bradley should both be appointed His Majesty’s Counsel.

The King’s Counsel Selection Panel made its recommendations to the Lord Chancellor after considering very carefully the evidence from application forms, assessments, and interviews with applicants. The Lord Chancellor accepted the Panel’s advice and made her recommendations to His Majesty accordingly.

This year 326 advocates applied, and there were 105 appointments.

The new appointments, announced today, are followed by an official ceremony at Westminster Palace in March where all new KCs are formally sworn in as Silk.

On behalf of all at Outer Temple Chambers, a huge congratulations to (the soon-to-be) Oliver Powell KC and Ben Bradley KC on this achievement.

Oliver Powell KC is a market leader in matters concerning the regulation of business activity and commerce. His practice includes asset forfeiture & civil recovery; business crime; civil fraud; corporate investigations; financial services; health & safety, environmental and maritime regulatory law; and sanctions & export controls. He is a contributor to both Millington and Sutherland Williams on the Proceeds of Crime and Lissack and Horlick on Bribery, the seminal texts on POCA and Bribery & Corruption respectively. He is routinely involved in cases involving allegations of dishonesty, sharp practice or breach of regulations. He is a Barrister of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (BVI), and a member of the New York State Bar Association.

Chambers & Partners quote a client as saying; “He’s one of the hardest-working people I know and he puts in the extra effort with clients.” Legal 500 calls Oliver a “first-rate barrister… tireless in his pursuit of excellence… [and] an extremely safe pair of hands”

Ben Bradley KC has over 15 years of experience in the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence sphere, acting for both Claimants and Defendants. He takes silk, having recently turned 40. He is a catastrophic injury specialist. His personal injury practice covers a range of niche areas of expertise, including aviation, equestrian, injuries arising from sport and cross-border litigation. He has significant experience of representing foreign nationals who leave the UK jurisdiction following catastrophic injury and has frequently been instructed alone in claims of 7-figure value. In recent years, he has recovered in excess of £50m for Claimants as well as defending multiple catastrophic injury claims on behalf of Defendants.

The legal directories endorse him across all his core areas of practice, being recommended as a Band 1 practitioner by Chambers & Partners for his clinical negligence work. He is described as being “quite simply outstanding” and was recently noted for being a “fierce litigator [with] a good eye for the detail” whilst equally putting “claimants and experts at ease”.
