Paul joined Chambers as a tenant in 2014 and accepts instructions in all areas of Chambers’ practice, with a focus on Employment & Discrimination / Harassment, Public Inquiries, Child Abuse, Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury.
Paul has acted and advised in a range of Employment Tribunal claims and other employment matters, including hearings on discrimination, unfair dismissal, worker status, TUPE, sexual and other harassment, time limits, reinstatement/re-engagement. He has appeared in several Employment Appeal Tribunal cases, including Geller v Yeshurun Hebrew Congregation and Home Office v Kuranchie, on issues such as the possibility of non-conscious direct discrimination, and the use of statistics to shift the burden of proof. He is regularly instructed to advise or represent large companies, SMEs, individuals, charities and trade unions. He has experience appearing in Scottish Tribunals and prior to joining Outer Temple, Paul worked in the Employment Team at BT Legal, where he represented the company in around 20 Employment Tribunal cases.
Paul is currently instructed as Junior Counsel to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, the largest Public Inquiry ever in the UK. His work is specifically focused on the investigations into children in care in Nottinghamshire, and the Child Migration case study, appearing at the first substantive public hearings. He was also instructed for three years as Junior Counsel to the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, which investigated the abuse of children in Jersey’s care system over many years. Paul’s role in these Inquiries has involved inquisitorial advocacy, oral submissions, drafting, strategy, providing advice and analysing over a million pages of documentary evidence.
Paul has also undertaken a wide variety of other work, including advising, drafting and acting in personal injury and clinical negligence claims, and has also appeared in bankruptcy proceedings, bail hearings for immigration detainees, and in a claim for unjust enrichment.
Paul studied law at the University of Cambridge, where he received a Senior Honorary Exhibition. He continues to play football regularly and follows his beloved Celtic from afar.
