Head of the Sports Group at OTC, Louis Weston, has recently collaborated with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Partnership Against Corruption In Sport (IPACS) and leading experts to write this guide on the prosecution of bribery in sport. The core aim of this guide is to assist criminal and regulatory prosecutors in structuring and prosecuting bribery-in-sport cases as well as to foster cooperation between law enforcement agencies, criminal justice authorities and sports organisations. Launch date announced for OUP’s ‘UK Sanctions Law and Practice’, co-edited by OTC’s Sophie O’Sullivan

We are excited to reveal the launch date and pre-order details for the very first practitioner’s textbook dedicated to the UK’s post-Brexit sanctions framework; Oxford University Press’ UK Sanctions Law and Practice, co-authored by Sophie O’Sullivan. This comprehensive reference guide to the UK sanctions framework, including the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 (SAMLA) was co-edited by OTC’s Business Crime & Sanctions team member, Sophie O’Sullivan, alongside fellow industry experts Amanda Pinto KC and Alex Haines. Sopie also co-authored four chapters of the book including a chapter on Financial Sanctions, and Designations and Challenges. James Smith has been published in the October 2025 edition of Butterworths Journal of International Banking and Financial Law, with a case note on the recent Supreme Court case, ‘Shvidler v Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs’. James’ article analyses a landmark judgment of the Supreme Court relating to the United Kingdom’s sanctions regime. The case involved Eugene Shvidler, a Russian businessman who was designated under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Mr Shvidler challenged his designation as disproportionately interfering with his private life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights and as affecting his right to property under Article 1 of the First Protocol of the Convention. Elizabeth Grace analyses Century Property v Aldiss, a case where the High Court granted mandatory injunction against a personal pension to enforce a judgment debt. Century Property sought mandatory injunctions against Dr Aldiss following his failure to pay instalments in accordance with the terms of a Tomlin Order, and his subsequent failure to satisfy the judgment debt when he did not adhere to the terms of the Tomlin Order. James Smith has written an article titled ‘Russia sanctions and the prohibition on trust services’ for the latest journal article of Trusts & Trustees, published on 9th July 2025. UK sanctions law contains a prohibition on the provision of trust services to or for the benefit of designated persons and persons connected with Russia. This article analyses the background to and legal framework of the prohibition. The article then looks at the application of the prohibition to Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories, before considering practical steps for affected practitioners. International injury specialist Ian Denham has been appointed to sit on the EU-UK Working Group of the Pan European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers (PEOPIL) together with a panel of expert lawyers from across the UK and Europe.
