CIArb London and Singapore Branch Joint Webinar on “The UK’s intention to ratify and sign the Singapore Convention on Mediation – an inevitable reality but what difference does it make?”

Join Robert Rhodes KC FCIArb of Outer Temple Chambers at the Singapore Convention held jointly by the Singapore and London Chapters of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators on Wednesday, 21 June.

About the event

Robert Rhodes KC will be leading this virtual event alongside speakers Michel Kallipetis KC FCIArb, Eunice Chua and moderator, Shobana Iyer.

The United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation is known as the Singapore Convention. The Convention is a Private International Law agreement which establishes a uniform framework for the effective recognition and enforcement of commercial mediated settlement agreements across borders.

The Convention was negotiated by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and came into force on 12th September 2020. It currently has 55 signatories and 9 parties have ratified it.

The UK Government has recently concluded in March 2023 that it is the right time for the UK to become a Party to the Singapore Convention on Mediation. The UK Government states this will show the UK is committed to maintaining and strengthening its position as a centre for dispute resolution and to promoting the UK’s flourishing legal and mediation sectors.

During this webinar – brought to you jointly by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ London and Singapore branches – you will hear from our distinguished speakers with an overview of the Singapore Convention; what it means for States that have ratified it; and, critically, what the significance is of the UK’s commitment to sign and ratify the Convention.
