Gerard McDermott KC and Tom Gibson represented a young paraplegic man who received an 8-figure settlement following an accident at work. The claimant was working as an engineer on overhead power lines when he fell 50 feet from a pylon – sustaining catastrophic injuries, including a spinal fracture. After 8 weeks in intensive care and over 5 months in hospital overall, he was discharged home to continue his rehab and his new life as a paraplegic. Following an early admission of liability, the legal claim involved complicated quantum issues surrounding the claimant’s future lost earnings, future care regime, and future accommodation needs in particular. The Royal Court of Guernsey recorded its highest ever personal injury damages award in the case of JG v AC. Gerard McDermott KC and Ian Denham, instructed by Stewarts, represented JG who sustained a complete spinal cord injury, resulting in tetraplegia. In November 2021, JG was a rear seated passenger in a VW Golf that was travelling in excess of the 25mph limit on a narrow road in Guernsey. The vehicle lost control and clipped a wall on the side of the road colliding with a pole, before being flipped upside down and coming to a stop on its roof. The International Law Section of the ABA have invited Gerard McDermott KC to join a panel discussing “Tradition, Innovation, and Influence in Class Action and Mass Tort Litigation: The English, Canadian, and American Experiences (CLE)” at their Fall Conference on 15th November. The 2024 ILS Fall Conference, in conjunction with Middle Temple and Inner Temple, takes place between 13th – 15th November. Personal Injury specialists, Gerard McDermott KC and Will Young of Outer Temple Chambers secure settlement for a cyclist after he was seriously injured in a road traffic collision. Gerard McDermott KC and Will Young were instructed by Ben Townsend and Lucy Mills of Stewarts in a case where the client, JF, was seriously injured in a road traffic collision while cycling to work in 2018. JF was knocked off his bicycle by a stolen vehicle which was driving on the wrong side of the road.
