Outer Temple’s barristers included in the 2026 Pro Bono Recognition list

We are delighted to share that thirteen of Outer Temple’s barristers have been included in the 2026 Pro Bono Recognition list for volunteering their time (25 hours or more) to provide free legal assistance to individuals, charities and community groups. Now in its third year, the List, published annually, recognises solicitors, barristers, chartered legal executives, trade mark attorneys, patent attorneys and registered foreign/European lawyers who provided 25 hours or more pro bono legal assistance over the last year. The initiative is supported by the Law Society, the Bar Council, CILEX and all the major pro bono organisations under the aegis of the Attorney General’s Pro Bono Committee. High Court approves settlement and grants rectification in respect of the Places for People Group Retirement Benefit Scheme

On 19 December 2025, the High Court (Richards J) handed down judgment in Places for People Pension Trustee Limited v Places for People Group Limited & Ors [2025] EWHC 3371 (Ch). Barristers from the Outer Temple Chambers Pensions Law Team were instructed for the Trustee and the Representative Beneficiary. The judgment approved a settlement agreed between the parties and granting rectification of several deeds of amendment in respect of the Places for People Group Retirement Benefit Scheme, a defined benefit, contracted-out occupational pension scheme with a total of 1,761 members as at 31 March 2024. This case is one of the most complex pensions claims ever brought before the courts of England and Wales, raising multiple questions concerning the validity of eight deeds of…

Success in Court of Appeal in British Broadcasting Association v (1) BBC Pension Trust Limited (2) Christina Burns

The Court of Appeal has dismissed the BBC’s appeal and has held that the BBC fetter protects future service benefits. Andrew Spink KC and Saul Margo acted on behalf of the successful Representative Beneficiary. The Court of Appeal has handed down its judgment in British Broadcasting Association v (1) BBC Pension Trust Limited (2) Christina Burns. In upholding the decision of the High Court, this landmark decision is the second case (after Lloyds Bank Pension Trust Corporation v Lloyds Bank plc [1996] PLR 263) in which a domestic court has found that a fetter on a pension scheme’s amendment power protects future service benefits. High Court hands down judgment in landmark case concerning amendment powers

The High Court has handed down its judgment in British Broadcasting Association v (1) BBC Pension Trust Limited (2) Christina Burns in which Andrew Spink KC and Saul Margo, instructed by Helena Berman at Stephenson Harwood acted on behalf of the successful Representative Beneficiary. This landmark decision is now only the second case (after Lloyds Bank Pension Trust Corporation v Lloyds Bank plc [1996] PLR 263) in which a domestic court has found that a fetter on a pension scheme’s amendment power protects future service benefits. The case was brought because the BBC wished to limit the ongoing costs of funding the BBC Pension Scheme and needed to understand the scope of the fetter on the Scheme’s amendment power. The…

Andrew Short KC and Saul Margo successful in Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd v Clark

The Court of Appeal has handed down judgment in Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd v Clark and Others in which the successful claimants were represented by Andrew Short KC and Saul Margo. In this long-running equal pay claim against Sainsbury’s Supermarket, a number of the claimants brought their claims on a claim form that only contained one EC number relating to one of the claimants on the form. The claims were rejected on that basis, but the claimants successfully appealed to the EAT where it was held that it is sufficient if one EC number is given on the claim form for any claimant who brings a claim on the same form.
